According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. On the other hand, there have been reports of Black-crowned Night Heron chicks being adopted by Common Terns ( source ). But maybe that is actually a good thing. No wonder it looks a bit pissed off.
