Since it was the first link in this chain, Pino Real was where I met many of Michoacán’s flagship species. As I look back at my eBird species list, it is astonishing how many of my lifers were first seen there. To my shock, I had a wonderful outing, with 63 species seen in six hours. One of my favorite bird species living by my house is the Juniper Titmouse. Although the Juniper Titmouse is not officially a threatened species, its numbers have been declining due to loss of habitat. But a Bewick’s Wren did build a nest, which it promptly abandoned before laying any eggs. Others had more luck.

Over a few obstacles, we follow the dirt track into an abandoned and overgrown claypit. Although quite a few species will have a second brood ( European Starlings among them), in the lowlands, mid-June is the end of the breeding season for many small passerines. The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. The plight of pelicans, raptors, and other species led to a ban on DDT in 1972 and a reduction in endrin use, allowing pelican numbers to rise. Abandoned fishing line also threatens pelicans along with many marine animals.

There are few places in the United States where simply driving around can leave you with a list of 30+ species, many of them large and spectacular. You can tell which abandoned lots host owls by a small roped off area with the tell-tale t-bars that the owls perch upon. I’ve spent the last week in southwest Florida.

These breeding colonies included other species of flamingos, but it was only the Andean Flamingo that appeared to have been the most affected, if indeed the egg extraction was one of the causes that led to the Andean Flamingo’s population decline. The Andean Flamingo is now protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

Common Sandpipers are not as common as other shorebird species in Broome, as there are only approximately 3000 in the whole of Australia. The cable was abandoned in 1914.
