Loa was six years old at the time she was abandoned, with her papers left with her. Nacho Paunero, President of El Refugio, notes that this is the first time in Spain that someone has been fined for abandoning their animal at the doors of a refuge. He considers it a step forward in the protection of animals in Spain.

Since I will still be enjoying my last couple of days in Spain on this week’s deadline, I thought it might be the moment to share it with all of you. One heron had the good sense to abandon his quest quickly. In April of this year, I had the crazy idea of submitting this article to 10,000 Birds for their consideration.

The species spread north to the Mediterranean, reaching parts of Spain and southern Europe, spread along the Atlantic coast of France and, at times, even reaching Britain and Ireland. They feed on insects stirred up by the herds, at times sitting on the animal itself picking off ticks and other insects.

When I traveled in Spain, my non-birding companion Kaylen was excited to see the White Stork (brings babies) and the Hoopoe (she’d just read Haroun and the Sea of Stories.) Which I think is rather key. Knowing what a sparrow is is kind of easy.

Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. In June 2006, Jane and I visited a chimpanzee sanctuary near Girona, Spain. And outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a dog rescued an abandoned baby by placing him safely among her own newborn puppies.
