Frontiers in Costa Rica Birding

10,000 Birds

Costa Rica has long been one of the more frequently visited global birding hotspots. Stable, easy to visit, and with lots of accessible habitats, its easy to see why many birders have opted to visit Costa Rica on several occasions. In addition to providing many people with wonderful life experiences, these birding visits have helped increase our understanding of local bird distribution.

Upside-down January

10,000 Birds

February is supposed to be that boring month coming after the hyperactive January, when IWC takes place (non-American CBC). In the more normal years, I would spend January visiting the very best wildfowling spots along the Danube and seeing the best birds there are, so in February I would be well saturated with birds and feeling: Still winter? Gosh!

Exploring eBird Mobile Tracks

10,000 Birds

eBirders who enter checklists via the app automatically create an eBird Mobile Track that is attached to the checklist, though it is apparently only visible to the checklist submitter. The track appears in the upper left corner of the online checklist, and it has intrigued me since it started appearing. I recently birded the Tualatin River NWR near Portland, Oregon, and made that my test case for a deeper dive into the Mobile Track.

Off The Beaten Path

10,000 Birds

One of the most regularly traversed roads for the purpose of birding on the island of Trinidad is the Arima-Blanchisseuse Road. With the most extensive altitude profile of any roadway in the country, one can drive from sea level to a modest 600m through lush tropical rainforest the entire way. Most folks who have come here for birding have stayed at the Asa Wright Nature Centre (likely reopening later this year – but more on that to come) which is located along this picturesque road.

Collaborative list – January 2022

10,000 Birds

As devoted readers of 10,000 Birds know, the writers can be members of the 10,000 Birds Collaborative group on eBird. The task of providing the monthly summaries of the Collaborative’s observations has passed from Redgannet to me, after five years of his heroic work. Many thanks for his tireless efforts. I am changing up the format, and it will likely evolve over time, but here is the first summary on my watch.

Birding the Danzhou Bay area (Hainan, China) by day

10,000 Birds

The Spring Festival – or Chinese New Year – is a big period for traveling in China. While not on the scale of bird migration, it is routinely and somewhat lazily described as the biggest annual migration of humans in the world. Being somewhat allergic to crowds, I usually avoid traveling during the peak of this period. Instead, I took a birding trip to Hainan ending a few days before the actual Chinese New Year – again with Alpinebirding, despite the lack of anything even remot

Guide to the Birds of China

10,000 Birds

To say that an update of John MacKinnon’s “A Field Guide to the Birds of China” (2000) has been highly anticipated by birders interested in Chinese birds is almost an understatement. While there are some decent Chinese-language guides, they are of limited use for (local) illiterates like me. The 2000 MacKinnon guide is showing its age while my preferred choice for the Shanghai area, Mark Brazil’s “Birds of East Asia”, covers non-Chinese locations such as Japan

Does Choco Screech-Owl Occur in Costa Rica?

10,000 Birds

Screech-owls don’t actually screech. It’s true and yet that was the name they were given. I suppose that sounds better than “tremulous”, “modulating”, or “little hooting” owls even if any of those names would be more accurate. In any case, screech-owls are birds of the Megascops genus, small nocturnal owls found in wooded habitats from southern Alaska to northern Argentina.

Bright and Brighter

In my never-ending quest to expand my year list, Monday the 24th took me to the area of La Escalera/El Palmar/Arúmbaro. This is my best place to pick up species that inhabit, or visit, the border between the Hot Country thorn forest and highland pine-oak forest habitats. I dipped on one of my favorite birds from this area, the Lesser Roadrunner , as well as the marvelous Sparkling-tailed Woodstar (a long-tailed hummingbird).

What’s Up with the ABA?  Part III (Finances)

10,000 Birds

I have recently written about the American Birding Association, as it is currently searching for a new president. As indicated in a prior post , the ABA is in debt and has routinely run annual operating deficits. Since that post, the ABA has updated the financial disclosures page on its website, so there is new information. Additionally, I was curious how the ABA arrived at its precarious financial position, so I did some historical research and decided to share the results.

In Defense of Bad Photos

So there I was, less than half an hour into my second formal outing for February, on the Ejido Triquillo (eh-HEE-do tree-KEE-yo) dirt road. I was wishing I had a birding buddy with me as a mixed flock overwhelmed my abilities. Suddenly, a large bird, which seemed to have a bright yellow breast and black head, flew overhead to a point behind multiple branches.

Birding Shanghai in January 2022

10,000 Birds

A comparatively short report this month, as I spent some time away from Shanghai and was afraid of venturing around too much and accidentally staying in an area with covid cases, which would have made travel within China even more difficult than it already is … Anyway, in January, coastal Fengxian was the site of one of the bigger birding attractions of Shanghai.
