The Usual Suspects

10,000 Birds

I went to the rural park of Kilómetro 23 last Monday, so-called because of its distance from downtown Morelia. It is not one of my favorite sites, but it is worth visiting a couple of times each year.

It can easily come across as laziness, but I like to call it efficiency. Some of my continental friends may not think twice of having to drive for four hours to see a single bird.

Where Worlds Collide

10,000 Birds

A week ago Monday, I drove half an hour to get to the area between the little towns of La Escalera, El Palmar, y Arúmbaro. As I was very surprised to discover recently, this area is at the same elevation as my home in Morelia.

A surprise Orange Chat

10,000 Birds

One of the target bird species for birders when they visit the Broome area is Yellow Chat. They are relatively easy to find year round and sometimes you are lucky when they pose for you. Some years we encounter Crimson Chats around Broome too and even less rare is the Orange Chat.

A solitary Chestnut-breasted Mannikin

10,000 Birds

As I have mentioned in the past we often place branches out for birds. The birds can then access water much more easily and we get the enjoyment of watching them all come in for a drink and bathe. At this time of year around the north of Australia the ephemeral lakes are drying out fast.

700 Year Birds in Costa Rica?- Coming Into the Home Stretch for 2021

10,000 Birds

It’s getting to be that time of year. That time when if you were keeping track of the bird species you had identified, and wanted to reach a certain number, you better come up with some strict birding strategies.

Last weekend we headed into the mountains of northern Trinidad – the concept of mountains is surely a relative one, although it is the highest conglomeration of hills in the country (and the northernmost outcrop of the Andes) the Northern Range never crosses 1,000m above sea level.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of November 2021)

10,000 Birds

Mid-November holds the dubious honor of being one of the most mundane birding periods imaginable in most temperate zones. Not to say, of course, that there’s no point in getting out to see birds this time of year–any day is a good day for birding.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of November 2021)

10,000 Birds

November’s end signals an end to a season of change and the beginning of a time of stability. Birds are still, as ever, on the move according to their own rhythms, but the next few months should bring some familiar friends to you, wherever you are.

How Birds Evolve: What Science Reveals about Their Origin, Lives, and Diversity: A Book Review by a Non-Science Person

Doug Futuyma believes in science and in the scientific basis of evolution. This shouldn’t have to be stated, especially in a book on bird evolution by an evolutionary biologist with a Ph.D. in zoology, but these are crazy times and it’s probably good to set up expectations.

10,000 Birds

I was just wondering about another topic for a post. Ideally, it should be one even less relevant than previous ones (like the one on wet birds, the one on blue birds, or the ones just showing birds eating or sleeping). Then I had an idea – a post based on birds starting with the same letter.

10,000 Birds

As we approach a long holiday season, birders’ thoughts turn to more than just meals and merriment. Songs of turtledoves and swans a’swimming are not far off, but we in the U.S. have our minds on turkeys right about now.
