Our Best Birds of 2020

10,000 Birds

2020 will be remembered as a year that we’d like to forget. Our 2020 year list stands at 324 for Victoria and the north of Western Australia combined, so we are more than happy with that under current circumstances. I’ll certainly drink to the end of 2020!

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of February 2020)

10,000 Birds

Though I traveled to NYC this weekend, Ivy and I nailed down our best bird before I left; a Short-eared Owl has been hunting at a local park not 10 minutes from our house, which makes for the easiest owl sighting we’ve snagged in a long time! The post Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of February 2020) appeared first on 10,000 Birds. Some weekends last longer than others.

How Many Birders Are There, Really? (Updated)

10,000 Birds

The most recent report was issued in December 2019 and it used data from the 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. There are (as of 2020) approximately 550,000 world-wide users of eBird. How many birders are there in America? For such a simple question, it turns out there are very few solid estimates. Indeed, there appears to be just one and it is cited repeatedly. Every few years, the U.S.

Some Birding News about Birders in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

As it learns to hunt and live on its own, the young bird has taken up residence in a tree right in front of the farm. Thanks to that bird’s choice of hunting grounds and David having plenty of time to watch it, he has documented the bird chasing everything from motmots to large woodpeckers as well as occasional visits from the parents. In Costa Rica, our July birding news usually consists of interesting sightings during the mid-summer tours.

The Falcon Thief: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

It didn’t occur to me till I started reading The Falcon Thief: A True Tale of Adventure, Treachery, and the Hunt for the Perfect Bird that there was also a possible threat to the eagle herself: poachers, who steal raptor eggs and chicks. Hunting with falcons then became falcon racing, with yearly competitions awarding multi-million dollar purses and, perhaps even more importantly, status and prestige. Birding in the Delhi area Part 1

10,000 Birds

House-hunting, apparently. One of the many things I did not know about Delhi is that it is the capital city with the second-largest number of bird species (after Nairobi). So when I went there for work last year, I added three days of birding to the trip. Most of the time was spent in and around Sultanpur, a highly recommended bird sanctuary about 50 km from Delhi.

As I neared the shore, I spooked a hunting Striated Heron who in turn spooked a Neotropic Cormorant hunting the shallow water. Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. Fortunately, throughout the tenure of the refinery many of the older, larger trees were preserved.

Owls around Delhi

10,000 Birds

Well, it mostly hunts at night, when it is dark anyway. Traveling to Delhi for work last spring, I was not very optimistic about birding there. Still, I contacted a local guide and shot for the moon: “Can you show me any owls”? Much to my surprise, he could, all within an hour`s drive of my hotel in Delhi (which after all is a contender for the most populous city in the world, similar to Shanghai, where I live). The Brown Fish Owl is the most common of all Fish Owls.

They were also busy eating very small bivalves and their hunting was proving to be very successful. Last weekend we had completed our 14 days of self-isolation. We were in much more of a rush to get to the beach than the supermarket!

Administrative Procedure for Birders: Duck Stamp Rulemaking

10,000 Birds

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) recently sought public comments on its proposal to permanently add a hunting element to the Duck Stamp art competition. For example, Congress passed the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act in 1934, but it did not mandate specific rules for a Duck Stamp Competition. For the 2018 competition, FWS included a one-year requirement that the theme celebrate “our waterfowl hunting heritage.” The comment period closed on March 16, 2020.
