Though I traveled to NYC this weekend, Ivy and I nailed down our best bird before I left; a Short-eared Owl has been hunting at a local park not 10 minutes from our house, which makes for the easiest owl sighting we’ve snagged in a long time! The most recent report was issued in December 2019 and it used data from the 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. There are (as of 2020) approximately 550,000 world-wide users of eBird. Of course, many eBirders live outside the U.S., so the American contribution to eBird is lower.

On Lady Elliot Island in our southern Barrier Reef, where I visited in late 2020, the Black Noddies began breeding recently in 1985. Eastern Reef Egrets, mostly white phase, hunt the shallow reefs when the low tide allows. Keeping the differences going, it regurgitates food to its young, behaviour more typical of gulls than terns.

2020 will be remembered as a year that we’d like to forget. Our 2020 year list stands at 324 for Victoria and the north of Western Australia combined, so we are more than happy with that under current circumstances. Since three times is a charm, I nominate the Sparkling-tailed hummingbird for my 2020 BBOTY.

They are also hunted. Though it’s dry terrain and hunting might be hard here, there are good nesting sites, cool and shady, with some impressive snags rising thirty or forty feet, with bowls large enough to accommodate the massive belly of a brooding female Great Gray. Jennifer Ackerman is one of my favorite bird authors.
