I finally chased down what has been a nemesis species for me at Webster Park, which seems to be one of Rochester’s most reliable winter finch hotspots. He also enjoyed Red Crossbills this weekend, but in Queens, only the second time he’s seen the species in his home borough and the first in over ten years!

I photographed the Black-tailed Godwit in my photograph ( above ) on 18 September 2020. They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. In the summer of 2020 it was back at Brancaster Staithe again, with the first record on 23 July. There were seven more sightings of it here, the last on 20 October.

Our 2020 drought taught me that any body of water, no matter how small, might host these “drought refugees” in dry years.
