Fur and Fangs rather than Feathers and Beaks

It was more than 50 years before I was to see another lynx, not in the Doñana, but in the Sierra Morena mountains to the north, which is now the best place to see these handsome cats in the wild. A Greek Wild Cat , photographed near Lake Kerkini I’ve had a few encounters with wild cats, too, in both France and Greece.

Nobody has seen any ever since after Category 5 Hurricane Dorian buffeted the low-lying islands with 200-mph winds for two days in September 2019. Snakes, cats and raccoons preyed on the nuthatches as well. A series of devastating hurricanes in 2016, 2017 and 2019 may have sounded its death knell. There’s just one problem.

Empty Pied Oystercatcher nests

Last week I introduced you to the first Pied Oystercatcher chicks of 2019 and so far they are surviving. There was evidence of feral cats and now we have seen foxes around Broome we know they will also be a threat to our local shorebirds. Pied Oystercatcher chicks can swim, but maybe feral cats will too if they are hungry.

We have observed the first Pied Oystercatcher chicks of 2019 over the past two weeks grow steadily. There are still very real threats of predation by feral cats and birds of prey, but we just have to be optimistic.
