Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for Birding

10,000 Birds

There are more than 550 national wildlife refuges in the United States, with at least one in every state and one within an hour drive of almost every major American city. Unlike national parks, national forests, national monuments, and other federal lands which must balance competing interests such as recreation and resource extraction, national wildlife refuges are legally required to be maintained for the preservation of wildlife. I am something of an aficionado of National Wildlife Refuges. The new features are called “ Explore a National Wildlife Refuge ,” and they can be found in the “explore” tab under the “explore a region” sub-tab. This is an excellent development: the National Wildlife Refuge System is likely the most important avian conservation system in the United States and separately providing NWR eBird data can only reinforce that important fact and make it more widely known to birders.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of December 2018)

Some may feel that 2018 is inching towards its close. A rather lackluster Sunday morning’s birding didn’t result in any major highlights for Corey, a bummer considering he was scouting for next weekend’s Christmas Bird Count, but he did manage to spot a sextet of high-flying Common Mergansers at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
