Pied Oystercatchers are breeding early again!

We normally encounter our first Pied Oystercatcher nest with eggs in it around the first week of July. In 2016 one pair of Pied Oystercatchers laid an egg early on June 11th. This year one pair of Pied Oystercatchers had their first egg on June 12th. The first egg laid. Pied Oystercatcher nest with two eggs.

The return of the Old Man

Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills of the World states that “disturbance by local people, tourists, and egg and zoo collectors has similarly reduced the colonies, and more protection is vital”. The Italian wintering grounds are the WWF Oasis Laguna di Orbetello, where in February 2016 I was delighted to meet the flock.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding season 2018

This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.

Urban birds, urban birding… is there a future?

Before (May 2016, by Zeljko Stanimirovic)…. There is not a slightest trace of asphalt, nor the promised sewage ponds, which may be good for the two Little Ringed Plover families incubating their eggs at the site as we speak, but is far from good for the people living there. Only the future of that picture worries me.
