I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. An hour later, I add another layer of clothing.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

If I don’t get it this time the Black Woodpecker will become an official nemesis bird. I will see at least 500 species for the year.

Other species of special significance are herons and egrets (this is very important foraging area), Ferruginous Duck, as well as Lesser Spotted and European Green Woodpeckers , Spotted Flycatcher and the Icterine Warbler. As Kenn Kaufman points out in an August 2014 article for Birdwatching , it’s possible to envision that tyrant label sticking to the kingbird either on the basis of its bold behavior or its red crown. The tyrant flycatchers, in turn, derive their name from the first member of the family to land a Latin name, the Eastern Kingbird.

I was able to maintain the new structure in the 2014 list , and this was a mighty fine birding year in all aspects. Great Spotted Woodpecker, Dendrocopos major. European Green Woodpecker, Picus viridis – Heidelberg/Leimen BW, Germany – 28 Jan. This was fun. And a lot of work. Song Thrush, Turdus philomelos.

The Eurasian Wryneck is the woodpecker that doesn’t look like a woodpecker, the bird with the portmanteau name that is also a medical condition (and which may remind some people of a Nora Ephron essay). But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family. It’s an open question.
