There were no ducks at the lake, but at a quarry that had filled with rain water they were bobbing around and also sheltered somewhat from the wind. Only three days later and after torrential rain, but eager to get a start on the 2014 year list we returned to the ephemeral lakes. It was quite rough on the water with the wind, though.

Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well. Rufous Crab Hawk This particular wetland spills onto the sheltered southern coast – worlds apart from the roaring Atlantic pounding the east coast.

The conservation and birding world, including 10,000 Birds, went into mourning back in 2014, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Martha, the last of the Passenger Pigeons. Women gathered their long skirts and hurried for the shelter of stores. Passenger Pigeons, for example. Children screamed and ran for home.
