When I was first learning to bird in the summer of 2013, I spent a summer living with my fiance in Virginia Beach. Exploring the trail, keeping the dog safely on a leash. Little seemed to have changed, other than a brand new LEED-certified environmental center that had been built near the terminus of the protected area.

February 2013. The tropical dry deciduous jungle, or “jungle”, however you see it, covers almost 90% of 600 km2 (230 mi2) of this protected area. In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road. It is one of the ancestors of domestic fowl. Good to know.

Since this was written in 2013, “the Forest Owlet population was in 2015 estimated by Birdlife International at less than 250.
