On Going Vegan

Animal Person

First I have to say that my husband and I were in our courtyard last night, with wine, vegan pizza with shiitakes, portobellos and chanterelles (still working through that five-pound bag of Daiya cheese), and Diana Krall playing. But today's post is about World Vegan Day, so onward.

On Atheism and Veganism

Animal Person

For me, atheism and veganism go hand-in-hand. We, atheists and vegans, ask: What do we know to be true, and what are we going to do about it? And because of that, we know that the just thing to do is to act accordingly: to be vegans. Vegans usually have spent quite a bit of time exploring our relationship with nonhuman animals and making a conscious decision to go against the mainstream.

On Being Vegan "Friendly"

Animal Person

The Factual table I posted yesterday annoyed me a bit, and here's why: the categories "vegan," "vegetarian," and "vegan-friendly." Vegan: Got it. Vegan-friendly : I remember going to Morton's Steakhouse in Chicago a bunch of years ago with a client of my husband's and ordering a plain baked potato, grilled asparagus with lemon, and a salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. It was a fabulous vegan meal. So what does "vegan-friendly" really mean?

On the Vegan "Diet"

Animal Person

My dogs eat vegan dog food. To say they are vegans is odd to me, though I have done that as the distinction is lost on most people and for the sake of a swift message it does the job. When I first saw PCRM's " Kickstart Your Health With a Vegan Diet " campaign, I let out a bit of a sigh. At least they didn't say "vegan cleanse." Also, PCRM doesn't advocate for veganism per se , as veganism does in fact involve so much more than diet.

On Keeping "Vegan" Pure

Animal Person

Kelly wondered whether the term "vegan" is " worth fighting for " given the latest trend of seemingly oxymoronish (waiting for that one to hit Webster's) terminology from the mouths of people who want to find a way to use animals, yet make it appear that they're not. A while back I tweeted that Bittman's VB6 (Vegan Before 6) should be called CB6, or Conscience Before 6, but VB6 does describe what he's doing in a sense. Is vegan a diet ?

Newsweek Editor Goes Vegan

Animal Person

Did you see that Newsweek editor David Noonan went vegan (see " I Can't Believe I'm Still a Vegan ")? There's already a fairly large number of comments that raise the usual topics against vegans and veganism and I didn't see any Animal Person readers in there, though there's no law that says you have to use the same username everywhere so that might not be evidence of anything.

On Vegan Grenades

Animal Person

Well, I think the grenade metaphor also applies to conversion to veganism. There is often lag time between the critical mass event and its accompanying decision to go vegan--and the the actual doing: being a vegan. There's intention, then the becoming, then the vegan. I don't personally know anyone who read a book or a pamphlet one day, became a vegan the next, and is still a vegan.

Vegan 100

On Mixing Bowl and Vegan Education

Animal Person

Though there are plenty of sites by and for vegans, I like this idea because it provides a built-in opportunity to convert people to veganism because you are side-by-side with them, so to speak, on the same site. Vegans seek out vegan sites, but a nonvegan looking for a chocolate cake recipe probably won't seek out a vegan site. What I have tried not to do over the past couple of years, with varying degrees of success, is focus my efforts on vegans.

Help Cristy Go Vegan

Animal Person

She knows going vegan is the right thing to do. She has said she wants to go vegan and knows it's the right thing to do, but she doesn't want to replace the problems she already has with new ones (she sort of has a handle on them now). Help Cristy go vegan. She's so close. She eats eggs for their protein. And sometimes cheese. She doesn't tolerate beans and already takes probiotics and digestive enzymes. She might be gluten intolerant.

Veganism is the "End Stage?"

Animal Person

I don't spend much time at Care2, and I'm never looking forward to going to a site when I know someone has insulted me, like yesterday, but I am curious about one thing that I've never heard before: " veganism is the end stage in terms of personal use of animals"/"veganism is just the end stage (for those who can do it) of a deep concern for animals." Here's what I don't understand: If veganism is the end, then doesn't that make me finished?

For the Budding Vegan Author

Animal Person

Books are obvious opportunities for advocacy and vegan education. How successful they are at creating new vegans or animal rights advocates depends on many factors. . Is your market vegans? If what you're writing is about vegan education, the bulk of your market isn't vegans, and presenting statistics about the number of vegans in the US isn't all that helpful (but not useless, as some might buy it to give to others, but that happens with every book).

Sowing the Seeds of Veganism

I could be reading into this, but it does appear that there's some discomfort on the part of non-vegans when they look through the calendar and I tell them the story. The (Re)Veganizing of the Greyhounds

Animal Person

I have fed Charles Hobson Booger, III and Violet Rays every type of diet from raw (as in, turkey necks and chicken backs) to pre-made raw (comes in patties with greens and bones and supplements in it), to homemade vegan to Evolution to pre-made vegan ingredients to a combo. I would never say that vegans have an obligation to veganize their dogs or cats. One of the first things people ask me when they find out I'm vegan and I have dogs is "What do they eat?"

On PF Changs and Vegan Authors

Animal Person

The PF Chang update, in case you haven't seen the response from the restaurant , is thus, once you incorporate the actual experiences of vegans who have gone through something similar with the restaurant: If you don't eat non-vegan sugar, there aren't many options. Also, ask to speak with the chef (my information, even about most of the tofu not being vegan, came from the chef via the server, by the way).
