There are two Painted Bunting populations, one that breeds along the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Florida and one that breeds in the interior United States and northern Mexico from southeastern New Mexico to western Mississippi. According to eBird , I have been an eBirder since December 23, 2009, so today is my 10th eBird anniversary. My profile page identifies the states that I have not eBirded, including Nebraska, North Dakota, Michigan, Mississippi, and Vermont. During the decade, I submitted 1,219 checklists and observed 555 bird species, all in the U.S.

Last week the media was eating up a story about a poor, little 80 year old woman who violated a 2009 No Trespass Order that prohibited her from visiting local parks in Massachusetts. She lived on a stretch of the Mississippi River near a power plant that keeps the river open all winter long (even when it’s below zero).

The last time I saw a Mississippi Kite was way up in Root, New York, back in 2009. Many New York birders made the pilgrimage to Montgomery County that year and managed to check Mississippi Kite off of their state checklists. Nate also had s ome good shots of Mississippi Kites in North Carolina recently.

According to the authors of the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyway Council’s joint management plan, there are many problems with the current survey count methods and further studies are needed. From July 1 2008-June 30 2009 Ducks Unlimited raised 200.4

So, this pair (I assume there are two, though I only saw one today) of eagles has a territory including small dogs and stray children, baby coyotes, crows, but mainly squirrels and marmots right around its nest, and a major river backed up by a large dam about a mile or two away (the Mississippi) and several lakes.
