White Squirrels of Rochester

10,000 Birds

The Bronx was beset by hordes of Black Squirrels , melanistic members of this common species. This post was first published in February 2009, but we can’t bear hiding something this good in the archives. So black squirrels have never been a surprise to me. Yes, the mythical white squirrel does indeed exist.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Tiger Afternoon

10,000 Birds

There’s a Sloth Bear in tall, dry grass, barely 50 metres from us, but all we can see is a dark, shape-shifting shadow that eventually becomes all but invisible. In a news report from 2009, the DNA quoted a senior Forest Department official who feared that the poachers must have killed around 20 tigers in the region in just five months.

On Jeff Corwin's 100 HEARTBEATS

Animal Person

When I was asked if I wanted to read Jeff Corwin's 100 HEARTBEATS (Rodale 2009) I was ambivalent. Read Tim’s account and enjoy his (and the Tambopata Macaw Project’s Alan Lee’s) photos judge for yourself… (NOTE: we first published this post in January 2009 but have to run it again because it is so good!) Each bird, regardless of species, seems perfectly content to wait for the other to make the first move toward the colpa.

My Nemesis Birds to Be

10,000 Birds

But I had seen one in 2006 and I have since seen them twice more so the species never rose to the level of nemesis bird for me. I mean, sure, I’ve had my share of dips but none of them were multiple attempts at a single species that did not end up in victory within three attempts. Otherwise, they will become true nemesis birds.

Orange-headed Thrush

10,000 Birds

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. Redgannet (the blog) fledged in February 2009 and the 100th post was published as he was invited to become a beat writer for 10,000 Birds. Very interesting species. The former British colony’s Z.c.
