A federal judge on Thursday upheld a 2008 decision to protect polar bears throughout their range as a “threatened” species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The polar bear was the first species added to the Endangered Species List due solely to the threat from global warming.

Even in protected areas of north-east India, prey densities are very low. The Guardian recently published the latest population analysis by the IUCN’s Dhole Working Group that has revealed that the area of occupancy of this species has significantly declined – close to 50% since the previous assessment in 2008!

While Alaska is increasingly devastated by global warming—melting glaciers, permafrost and sea ice, as well as the severe impacts on wildlife, ecosystems and people—she seems to be working not to protect the polar bear or ultimately the citizens of her state, but to make sure nothing gets in the way of energy company plans for expansion.

An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick. Their numbers have declined so rapidly that a paltry 10 percent of the pre-20th century population remains (read Adam Riley’s post on Africa’s endangered species ). From 1978 to 2008 the Namibian population declined from 12,162 pairs to 4,563 pairs.

Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . According to the World Bank, up to 80 percent of Ghana’s forests had been destroyed by illegal logging by 2008.
