Heronry at Sultanpur

A study conducted at Sultanpur (Abdul Jamil Urfi, Thangarasu Meganathan and Abdul Kalam) between 2003 and 2005 noted that the the clutch size was bigger in early nests. It was thought that later nests with smaller clutches were either replacement clutches from a failed nest or from low-quality breeders.

The Eurasian Collared-Dove Explosion: Coming to a Town Near You!

In the mid-1970s, a local breeder was burglarized and a few of his birds escaped, after which the breeder released his remaining stock of about 50 birds 1. This first map is data from 2002 through 2003. Like most dove species, Eurasian Collared-Doves are prolific breeders. Click on photos for full sized images.

Little Barrier Island and the New Zealand Storm-petrel

Cook’s Petrel ( Pterodroma cookii ) is another range-restricted breeder that nests on Little Barrier Island. The species was lost for over a hundred years before being rediscovered in 2003. This week it emerged that the island is important for another rare New Zealand bird, the critically endangered New Zealand Petrel.

Black-faced Spoonbill

Many of these potential breeders though will not nest. This happened in 2003 when 73 birds died from Avian Botulism. Young Black-faced Spoonbills have only a small amount of black facial skin, light colouring on their bills and show black at the tips of their primaries. Perhaps they also have trouble telling who’s which.

Polygynandry and avian swingers

In the case of Acorn Woodpeckers, they are cooperative breeders (as with many other polygynandrous species), which seems to predispose species to polygynandry. Alpine Accentors, on the other hand, are not cooperative breeders and females typically have very little to do with each other.
