Published February 8, the WHO List of Medically Important Antimicrobials adds new categories on the basis of their importance in human medicine, risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and the potential human health implications of inappropriate use in nonhuman sectors, particularly in animal agriculture.

Last year I bade farewell to an old friend, or, to be more precise, my much-loved Swarovski scope. Technically, it was an ATS 80 HD spotting scope, together with three eyepieces, a 20x, 30x and a 25×50 wide-angle zoom; the latter was the lens I used most often.(The 20x wide-angle lens was great in poor light in the rain forest.) I had owned the scope, from new, for 23 years, in which time it had travelled with me to four different continents and around 40 different countries.

More dairy cattle in Idaho, New Mexico, and Texas have tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI). The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced April 1 and 2 that these mark the first known cases of HPAI in cattle in Idaho and New Mexico, and add to the two detections in Texas and two in Kansas that were announced on March 25.

Of all the gulls that occur in Britain, there’s none that is as pelagic as the Kittiwake. It’s a bird that rarely occurs inland, and outside the breeding season it spends its time far out to sea. In Portland, Oregon, the Golden-Crowned Kinglet is fairly common in appropriate habitat, particularly during migration and in winter. The eBird bar chart for the kinglet in Multnomah County, which includes Portland, is below. But this “tiny, hyperactive songbird” is not found only high in the tree canopy. It also found much lower, adorning some of Portland’s public trash cans.

When waiting it felt like ages, but once I heard them it felt like they had returned way too early: Firecrests singing in our local park in Bonn. On the way to work in the mornings and on weekend walks, I was very glad to hear the songs of all the migrants arriving. But this week, I had no car to drive, so I had to go on foot to the nature reserve on the far side of our neighborhood. I remember reading about them as a huge hit but saw an article today saying that Tian Tian (the female) was recalled to China and retired because she developed a fear of people likely due to being on display for so long in the zoo. Also seems very cruel that the zoo tried to so many failed and forced artificial insemination procedures on her simply to try and make extra money from cubs as apparently they were paying a million dollars a year just in loan fees to display the pandas.

Has anyone had a Wild Erminskin/Weasel really really try to become your friend? Over the past 3 to 4 months, a wild Weasel (I live in Rural Alberta) has been visiting me in my home.
