The AVMA American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) has received a letter of intent from a group of veterinarians wishing to seek recognition for a clinical wildlife practice specialty within the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. The ABVS will accept public comment on the proposal through July 31.

Most weeks, I can blog about going somewhere a bit more exotic, and seeing something a bit more unusual for me. But this week, I had no car to drive, so I had to go on foot to the nature reserve on the far side of our neighborhood. This place, called Los Filtros Viejos (the Old Filters) because it used to be Morelia’s main water source, is actually a great place for birding.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its updated list of medically important antimicrobials. Published February 8, the WHO List of Medically Important Antimicrobials adds new categories on the basis of their importance in human medicine, risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and the potential human health implications of inappropriate use in nonhuman sectors, particularly in animal agriculture.

Dr. Henry E. Childers, a Rhode Island practitioner and former president of the AVMA and the American Hospital Association, died April 15, 2024. He was 93. Dr. Childers was respected throughout the veterinary profession.

Last year I bade farewell to an old friend, or, to be more precise, my much-loved Swarovski scope. Technically, it was an ATS 80 HD spotting scope, together with three eyepieces, a 20x, 30x and a 25×50 wide-angle zoom; the latter was the lens I used most often.(The 20x wide-angle lens was great in poor light in the rain forest.) I had owned the scope, from new, for 23 years, in which time it had travelled with me to four different continents and around 40 different countries.

When waiting it felt like ages, but once I heard them it felt like they had returned way too early: Firecrests singing in our local park in Bonn. On the way to work in the mornings and on weekend walks, I was very glad to hear the songs of all the migrants arriving. In addition to the Firecrests, within a few days the songs of Common Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, and Eurasian Blackcap started resonating through the freshly sprouting vegetation.

I love animals and to be honest I'm not a big fan of people. But unfortunately I don't have a university degree and even if I wanted to or could I can't afford the time and money to become a vetinarian. Most other jobs with animals that I know of are volunteer so you don't make money. I'm willing to study, educate, work experience, whatever it takes.

As far as i know elephants are nice animals and as long as you dont mess with their children they wont attack right? lets say i am lost in a safari or something and theres a group of elephants nearby if i come close to them are they likely to attack me just bc i approached them ? or what if i stay away but looking at them ?

Hello everyone. I found this egg in the middle of my yard on the ground about half an hour ago, i didn't want to leave it there because it seemed misplaced, we have a dog walking around freely with a good appetite and the temperature outside is 3°C. When i picked the egg up it was already cold, it's around 2.5 by 2cm in size. Ok so today I saw a pigeon unlike any I’ve ever seen. It was weirdly fat particularly in the neck area, its tail feathers were shaped in an odd way, and it kept making this sound. Like a regular pigeon sound followed by a weird exhale? Does anyone know what that is?

Is it okay to leave a dog ( about 6 months old ) outside for longer periods of time ( since evening till morning ) at temperatures of 0-5° ( 32F to 41F ) at kinda windy weather? It's my neighbourh which has this dog and as i know it has no shelter also.

I remember reading about them as a huge hit but saw an article today saying that Tian Tian (the female) was recalled to China and retired because she developed a fear of people likely due to being on display for so long in the zoo. Also seems very cruel that the zoo tried to so many failed and forced artificial insemination procedures on her simply to try and make extra money from cubs as apparently they were paying a million dollars a year just in loan fees to display the pandas.

I have a family dog that we take yearly for checkups and i bring my cat annually too. its happened multiple times where i’ll be talking about how my cat has a vet appointment, someone says “oh no, is he okay?”. when i tell them its just a checkup they’re surprised. i guess some people only take their pets when there’s an issue? what do u do?

Has anyone had a Wild Erminskin/Weasel really really try to become your friend? Over the past 3 to 4 months, a wild Weasel (I live in Rural Alberta) has been visiting me in my home. I need to state I have not encouraged him and have trapped him twice, the second time taking over 20km away before releasing him.he was back in hours and had to walk up to me on my couch to show that he was back.

So to clarify our pug has been dead for months. I stopped visiting my mother and found out this just recently. Our pug was biting eating chewing on his leg. My sister went into the bathroom while he was giving him a bath and smelt it as he sprayed it on our pug. This has been on my mind and it angers me. Is this abuse? Is it a thing? I just found this out.

Hi everyone, theres a dog 2 houses left to ours, it is a puppy, couple months old. She/He has been crying outside for over 1 week now, but it's really a loud cry. Literally able to hear it for about 500meters. Me and my sister went to their family and told them to bring it inside, that it's not good to leave a puppy outside for so long after crying.

I found this egg buried in my yard today. Or more accurately, my dog found it. It was already cracked as shown in photos. I don't know if it had hatched or if the dog got it (she was licking it when I found her). We were guessing it may be a from a snake or other reptile, as it was buried and packed in pretty solid, but we have no idea. If it helps, I live northern Maryland by the Chesapeake Bay.
