The Humane Society Legislative Fund is having a contest where you can submit your idea for a new law protecting animals. The winner will get a trip to Washington DC to lobby for it with HSLF staff.

Arkansas Out of the Dark Ages with Cruelty Law
It's not perfect, but it's progress in one of the more animal welfare-challenged parts of the US. Mike Beebe has signed into law new animal-cruelty restrictions that make aggravated cruelty to cats, dogs and horses a felony on the first offense.

Update on National Meat Association vs. Brown
The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recently heard arguments in National Meat Association v. Brown, a case in which the meat industry is attempting to invalidate a California law designed to reduce animal suffering and protect public safety. Did anyone know this was going on?

Southern Senator Stops Confirmation Over Animal Protection
has put a hold on Cass Sunstein's confirmation as the Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. According to Michael Markarian from the Humane Society, Sunstein's confirmation is supposedly being held due to pressure from some agribusiness groups. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.)

USHS Alleges Animal Abuse at the University of Louisiana New Iberia Research Laboratory
The video footage shows monkeys biting themselves and slamming against the bars of small cages. Other scenes show a newborn chimpanzee being taken from its mother and an adult screaming as a lab worker aims a tranquilizer gun before the animal falls sedated from a shelf to the floor. Prop 2 Opponents Accused of Laundering Money
This news is from early September and is reported by Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society. on Prop 2 - Californians for Humane Farms - has uncovered an election scam and is charging the measure’s opponents with laundering money in violation of state campaign finance laws.

Are You Wearing Man's Best Friend? That Trim on the Hood of Your Jacket Might Be Dog Fur!
They belong to the canine species Nyctereutes procyonoides. As reported in the AP story, two styles of Sean John jackets—one a hooded snorkel style, the other a classic version—were originally advertised as faux fur, but an investigation by the Humane Society of the United States [ HSUS ] found that the jackets were made from dog fur.
