These birds were foraging the shoreline at Big Egg Marsh in Queens, probably hoping for some Horseshoe Crab eggs. It is in the spirit of the season then, that I share with you these shots of Least Sandpipers Calidris minutilla. Whatever they were doing they were very cooperative for me and my digiscoping rig.

One of my regular stops in late May and early June is Big Egg Marsh, a wonderful salt marsh just a short distance south of the much-more-famous Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It is a great spot for Horseshoe Crabs to spawn and lay eggs so it is no wonder that shorebirds congregate to eat those eggs. Eh, Semipalmated Sandpipers.

Killdeer on nest Killdeer eggs One day while we were at work my coworker received a phone call letting her know that the eggs had started to hatch. The birds had grown so used to people and bulldozers that they allowed incredibly close approach and I returned a couple of times to photograph the nest.

Sadly they were not successful with their first clutch of eggs, but are busily making nest scrapes again. We are hopeful that soon they will have laid another clutch of eggs. Since then we have had the two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers that breed between the Surf Club and Gantheaume Point lay their first clutch of eggs.

But nope, the built it and then they laid an egg in it. I have tons of trees and could put it close but not sure if they would be able to find it and don't want them to abandon their egg. when I did I realized I was being watched by the bird. I assumed I had frightened them and they wouldn't return. Can I safely move it?

We normally encounter our first Pied Oystercatcher nest with eggs in it around the first week of July. In 2016 one pair of Pied Oystercatchers laid an egg early on June 11th. This year one pair of Pied Oystercatchers had their first egg on June 12th. The first egg laid. Pied Oystercatcher nest with two eggs.

I dug a hole for a sewage pit in Australia and found this little egg in the hole I was digging, it had embryo in it and had heaps of little copper wire like ears. does anyone know what this animal could of been? I put it in a draw but the next morning it was gone. Im thinking echidna maybe? No I wasn’t high.

The first pair of Pied Oystercatchers to breed this year have had a second clutch of two eggs and they had two chicks, but sadly they were lost within a few days of hatching. Another pair of Pied Oystercatchers lost their eggs to a sand goanna. Pied Oystercatcher egg camouflaged on the sandstone cliff.

Eggs in a Pied Oystercatcher nest I always walk by briefly to confirm the number of eggs, but it is very rarely more than two eggs in Broome. I suppose they know me!

We had been patiently awaiting the arrival of the two chicks since the eggs were laid a month ago. I took a few photos of the chick that had hatched out and the remaining egg. Since I found the first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 I have learnt that the eggs rarely hatch due to predation and if they do hatch then a fully fledged chick is a rare and wonderful outcome. This year has been like other years with the first eggs being laid late June and the first chicks hatching recently.

We have often suspected that the Sand Goannas would steal eggs as a food source from the Pied Oystercatcher nests if they found them. The two pairs should have been close to hatching their eggs from their first clutch. The pair of Pied Oystercatchers to the north have now laid a second clutch of two more eggs.

Crested Pigeons only lay two eggs and the nest we observed in our local park successfully hatched out two young. The Crested Pigeon would have incubated the eggs for twenty one days. The nest was quite full once the Crested Pigeons were ready to fledge.

Our first Pied Oystercatcher eggs for this year’s breeding season were laid early and were due to hatch last weekend. This pair of Pied Oystercatchers never seems to have a problem with incubating their eggs. They take it in turns over the twenty eight days sitting or hovering over the eggs. Pied Oystercatcher egg.

In the header photo and below you can see the adult is shading three eggs. Comb-crested Jacana shading three eggs. There was an egg that had floated off and it was not clear if it could be saved. The egg is to the left of the adult bird just above one of the fringe lilies. An egg that has floated out of the nest.
