Into the Nest: A Book Review in the Time of Nesting

10,000 Birds

Producing a book about birds and nesting is a dangerous business. First of all, there is the cuteness factor. The truth is that there are few images cuter than baby birds in the nest opening their mouths and begging for food, but there are curmudgeons amongst us, myself included, who don’t like to admit this. We simply refuse to squee. Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds hum

Heirs to Madagascar’s Royal Throne Born

The world’s critically endangered lemur population has just expanded by two: twin baby ring-tailed lemurs born at the Duke Lemur Center, both named Princess Julien after Madagascar’s most famous royal lemur, King Julien. Do Not Feed Baby Birds Ham

10,000 Birds

Wildlife rehabilitators are a multi-tasking lot. Not only do we take care of zillions of injured and orphaned birds/mammals/reptiles/whatever, we also have to deal with and educate the public. The baffling, mind-boggling public. Luckily for rehabbers there’s FaceBook, where we can b h and moan and vent and swap can-you-top-this stories with other rehabbers.

A Juvenile Nuttall’s Woodpecker Visits the Garden

10,000 Birds

The Nuttall’s Woodpecker’s ( Picoides nattallii ) diet consists mainly of (about 80%) insects, primarily captured by probing and gleaning from tree bark. They also dine on some nuts and seeds but I never knew until I spotted this juvenile in our garden, that they also occasionally eat fruit! Click on photos for full sized images. I first became aware of the bird’s presence when I heard the unmistakable raspy flight call this species utters, usually as it moves from one locatio

Easy, Bonus Birding at Cano Negro, Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

There are lots of great birding sites in Costa Rica. In fact, go anywhere with a good amount of natural forest and the birding is gonna be good. Although most birders visiting Costa Rica hit pretty much the same sites, you could just as well go to a bunch of other, lesser known places with the same type of habitat and see most of the same birds. However, there are a few stand out sites here and there that are significantly better for species like Jabiru, Lance-tailed Manakin, and Nicaraguan Grac

Location, Location

Nest predation is the driving force of nest site selection by bird. Generally the more exposed the egg are, the more hidden or camouflaged the nest should be. Giant Hummingbirds build cup-shaped nests where eggs are exposed, but rather than hiding or camouflaging the nest, the biggest of all hummers generally places its nest in cacti. The long, sharp, and barbed thorns discourage rats and other small mammals from climbing the cacti to reach the eggs and chicks.

Leaping Foxes

10,000 Birds

Germany is currently experiencing something for which the English have no nice expression. We call it a “mouse gradation year” I was not able to find a catchy English term for “gradation year” – it’s what happens when a certain species showing population cycles reaches a peak year. On the other side, and to even the score, the German term “mouse” is rather unspecific compared to the repertoire the English-speakes have at their service.

Whimbrel in Queens. Finally!

10,000 Birds

I have been very slow in sharing what was for me pretty exciting news. Yes, back in May I added a new bird to my Queens list , one that was long overdue. Finally, finally, finally, I saw a Whimbrel in Queens! It was number 311 on my Queens list and a bird that I was growing increasingly frustrated with as several are spotted in Queens each and every year.

Birding Botswana’s Borders

10,000 Birds

I’ve never been one to be overly concerned about whether a bird “counts” People, and organisations, have complex and elaborate rules about whether a bird you saw or heard actually is a bird you saw or heard, which seems a very unnecessary way to add complexity to an already complex hobby. But I do have rules about whether I can have said to have visited a country, ie does the country “count” which I have inherited from my family, particularly my Dad.

Just like in people, yawning is contagious in birds

10,000 Birds

Apologies in advance for the ridiculous amount of yawns that reading this post will engender. (Our first victim appears to be the Ring-billed Gull above, photographed by Corey.) Don’t say you weren’t warned! Science is fairly well established that yawning can spread like wildfire among groups of humans, as well as a few other mammals. New research suggests that the phenomenon of contagious yawning can also be seen in birds.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of June 2015?

10,000 Birds

As we in the Northern Hemisphere inch day by day from “sorta” summer to true summer, the complexion of local birding becomes a lot less diverse. Gather ye migrants while you may! Unfortunately for me, this weekend lies heavy with work. However, I have one shot at some time in nature, a shot I will grab with gusto. Corey has his eyes set on some of Westchester and Orange Counties’ finest birding spots, lucky dog.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of June 2015)

10,000 Birds

Now that the last weekend of what is often considered the best birding month of the year has passed, take stock of how you spent your time. Did you see everything you wanted to? Honestly, I didn’t, at least not this weekend when our temperature plummeted 40 degrees. Fortunately, I got brilliant views of a big, beautiful Belted Kingsfisher on Keuka Lake.

Birding Broome to Derby

10,000 Birds

On our last visit to Derby in December last year it was the Wet Season and very hot and with the risk of a torrential storm. For this reason we made it a day trip and we did not consider overnighting in the bush. Now it is perfect weather for camping in the bush and enjoying the wildlife and for this reason we took two days to explore the bush between Broome and Derby.

Thank a Republican for Trying to Strip All Protections from Migratory Birds

10,000 Birds

This is not the first time that I have pointed out the perfidy of Republicans in United States government as it relates to birds or conservation. But this attempt by Congressmen Duncan of South Carolina to completely prevent any enforcement of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act is beyond the pale, even for bird-hating Republicans. From the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Switchboard blog : So, naturally, it is also the perfect time for Congressional Republicans to completely suspend one of
