Birding on Steroids or the Kerkini Lake in 10 Pictures

10,000 Birds

Instead of waiting for the spring to come to me, I prefer to travel south to greet it. (One may also read this as “those who paddle their own canoe do not have to wait for their ship to come in.”) This time I was lucky enough to join a fam trip organised by Natural Greece, an ecotourism company from Athens, and spend a few days at my favourite Kerkini Lake, which you already birded through my bins ( April and September ).

What is the State Bird of North Carolina?

10,000 Birds

When birders in the eastern United States see a flash of red up in the canopy or deep inside nearby bushes, more likely than not those crimson feathers belong to the iconic Northern Cardinal. Perhaps it was their flashy color or the males’ tall crest that attracted the legislature to the bird, because in 1943 the Northern Cardinal became the official state bird of North Carolina.

Louisiana Waterthrush Photo Gallery

10,000 Birds

One of the earliest wood-warblers to arrive each spring here in the northeast is the Louisiana Waterthrush ( Parkesia motacilla ). Just like with Pine Warblers and Palm Warblers , we birders go out of our way to make sure that we see them as soon as they show up while the later-migrating and very similar Northern Waterthrush gets nowhere near the same amount of attention.

Lesser Celandine

10,000 Birds

Because I know that you are a cultured bunch and because you probably won’t have time to stop and smell the roses for the next couple of weeks, I call William Wordsworth to my aide to help usher in spring. He, daffodils mostly spent by the end of April, turns to the Lesser Celandine for his inspiration and to feed his yellow fetish. To The Small Celandine.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of May 2015?

10,000 Birds

The Greeks had their sacred groves, the Druids their oak worship, the Romans their games in honor of Floralia. In Scotland the herdsman formed circles and danced around fires… how will you celebrate the beginning of May? This, according to The Incomplete, True, Authentic and Wonderful History of MAY DAY , is the time of year when those who struggled through winter celebrate spring: Everywhere people “went a-Maying” by going into the woods and bringing back leaf, bough, and blos

A Spring Appetizer and a Review of the Opticron Countryman BGA

10,000 Birds

Perhaps I was always destined for disappointment this spring, between last year’s ridiculous May migration bonanza and the killer birds I started the year with. Nevertheless, a combination of cold days, winds from the north, and time-consuming personal logistics mean that I have entered the merry month of May with a less-than-stellar list for my putative Big Year.

Geelong-Rippleside Park to Eastern Park

10,000 Birds

Last Saturday Grant had to go to Geelong for the day and so I took the chance to go birding for the day while he was hard at work. The big downside to the trip was getting up at 05:30am and being dropped off at 07:30am with a pick-up time of 17:30pm. The weather was predicted to warm up, but believe me it was not particularly pleasant on the coast when I was left at Rippleside Park.

The Black Album: Black Birders, Blackpoll Warblers, Black-tailed Godwits, Black Flamingos, and more

10,000 Birds

After a long hiatus that included a new cat, a new apartment, and enough time with the in-laws to last me quite awhile, here’s a rundown of April’s bird news: Funny, sad, and thought-provoking … an African-American ornithologist’s video tips for birding while black. (Even more thought-provoking is the original article from which it sprang.) Props on the sweet Barred Owl call, too.
