For a Wildlife Rehabber, Joy in August is Possible

10,000 Birds

By the time August rolls around, wildlife rehabilitators are fried. There have been months of late-night phone calls, hordes of orphans, and lots of less-than-satisfying encounters with the public, who, shall we say, don’t always have the best interests of wildlife at heart. Here is a typical wildlife rehabber near the end of August: But then something amazing happens.

A Lump and a Split and the List is Shredded?

10,000 Birds

(With regards to The Smiths for the title inspiration). North American listers, if you haven’t already been following the latest drama in bird taxonomy, courtesy of two new studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, buckle up … because it’s probably going to be a bumpy ride. The first paper, in the new issue of Current Biology , compares the genetics of Blue-winged and Golden-winged Warblers.

Twitching the Summer Tanager in Northern California

10,000 Birds

No one can accuse me of being a twitcher but when I checked my email Sunday morning and found that the local list serve posted a Summer Tanager ( Piranga rubra ) only 45 minutes from my home, well, that would be a lifer for me Click on photos for full sized image. So off I went, camera in hand, to see if I could find the wayward bird. No sooner had I parked and gotten out of my car when some of the folks at the campground asked if I was “looking for the bird?

Germany’s Great Bustards and how to see them

10,000 Birds

I am not entirely sure whether most birders outside Germany know or realize that Germany still has a decent population of one of Europe’s most attractive and desired bird species: the Great Bustard Otis tarda. This species, one of the heaviest birds able to fly, was once common through most of southern and central Europe and all the way to Mongolia, but was driven to extinction by hunting and changes in agricultural practises in most of its European range during the 19th and early 20th cen

Common Gallinule, the lost Moorhen

10,000 Birds

After getting to spend some time with a few of these birds recently, I decided to feature them in my story this week. That and the fact that I have barely been able to get out in the field for the last three weeks. Hurricane Season on the Baja is not always an enjoyable thing. Like many birders, ever since I was a child, these wonderful, shy birds have been known as the Common Moorhen.

Get Saltators in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

Saltators, saltpotaters, salt n peppa, saltasaywhat? “Saltator” is another one of those “intriguing” names for certain bird species that live in Costa Rica and the Neotropical region. It’s a funny name for birds that sort of look like a missing link between tanagers and cardinal grosbeaks but I guess it fits. Although in Latin, “saltator” means “jumper”, these birds aren’t doing any kangaroo imitations.

What is the National Bird of Panama?

10,000 Birds

In her book, “ On a Wing and a Prayer, “ Sarah Woods describes the bird that captured her interest when she first visited Panama: “At more than one metre tall and able to kill a monkey with a single swipe of its powerful, knife-like talons, [H]arpy [E]agles are incredibly hard to find.” Many share her fascination with this bird of prey, and it was designated Panama’s official bird in 2002.

Backyard Birding in Breckenridge

10,000 Birds

It’s been nearly three weeks since the family and I left Breckenridge but I’m still thinking about all the birds that we enjoyed from my aunt and uncle’s backyard deck at 10,500 feet above sea level. Species that back here in New York either don’t occur or only occur in winter and that necessitate a drive far to the north of New York City were common in the backyard in Breckenridge.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of August 2016)

10,000 Birds

What’s better than a weekend with a big birding trip lined up? Not much, actually, but a weekend where you manage to finagle some quality birding despite lack of plans might come in a close second. But I’d still take the first option… Nonetheless, I managed to fit in a stop at Montezuma NWR between meetings this weekend. Nothing surprising turned up, but I don’t see Tundra Swans often enough to be jaded about them.
