A Rehabber’s List of Worst Bird Myths

10,000 Birds

One might think that thanks to the Internet, all those ridiculous old wild animal myths handed down for generations would finally die a deserved death. But noooo. Thanks to the Internet not only don’t they die, they’re joined by more. I asked a group of wildlife rehabilitators: “What are some of the Worst Bird Myths? Feel free to vent!”. Rehabbers are very responsive, although constantly living under the gun makes us sometimes vent about species that aren’t necessarily the ones in question.

Birding in Costa Rica Off the Beaten Track at Hitoy Cerere

10,000 Birds

There is a regular birding route in Costa Rica that hits every major habitat in the country and makes an easy, logistical friendly loop. The sites on that loop are visited by most tours and include hot spots like the Dota Valley (think Savegre), the Golfo Dulce lowlands, Carara, and La Selva among other places commonly featured on trip reports. Those time honored sites are always good and result in fantastic, birdy trips but they aren’t the only places in Costa Rica for birding.

Sibley Birds East & Sibley Birds West: A Review

10,000 Birds

I purchased my first Sibley— The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America —in 2003. It was my second field guide, and I quickly gave it that worn look I imagined all “real” birder’s field guides had by dropping it into the creek at Allaire State Park in New Jersey (by accident!). My Eastern Sibley served me well, replacing the Peterson’s with which I learned my ducks and waders.

South Florida Specialties Birding

10,000 Birds

On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. Of course, I contacted Carlos Sanchez , alleged south Florida birder extraordinaire, to maximize the returns on what time I could spend. And, let me tell you, we maximized the hell out of the time that I had despite Carlos’s insistence on doing things his way.

What’s in a Name: Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet

10,000 Birds

Once you eliminate the risque jokes (I know, I know, but it’s a family blog) the Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet might have the most comical name in American birding. How did this itty-bitty bird come to be saddled with a moniker that sounds exactly like a punchline about bird names? For once, the answer doesn’t lie in the ego of its discoverer or a folk interpretation of its call.

Quoth the Raven: Who you callin’ bird-brained?

10,000 Birds

They may (or may not) be smarter than a fifth-grader. But Ravens (like the fine specimen above photographed by Corey) are no slouches in the intelligence department. Recently published research suggests that these corvids are at least as clever as primates like chimpanzees. A team of researchers from Sweden, the UK, and Germany collaborated to study intelligence in Ravens, Jackdaws , and New Caledonian Crows.

Belding’s Yellowthroat, Endemic and Endangered!

10,000 Birds

A couple of years ago, I was invited to participate in a community hummingbird Festival, in Todos Santos, BCS, Mexico. It was at this fantastic event, that I was made aware of the plight of the Belding’s Yellowthroat, Geothlypis beldingi. This very small endemic marsh dweller, is being literally be encroached to extinction. The Belding’s live in a very small section of the lower Baja, in the fresh and brackish water marshes.

Pied Starlings

10,000 Birds

Just a quick post this week, as I’m rushed for time and stressed about house buying. And you really don’t want me posting about that. So, anyway, Pied Starlings. Pied Starlings don’t need to get their black feet into the property market and are much happier because of it. They will sit on tiles in search of a scrap though. Africa is home to many striking and brightly coloured members of the starling family, a family that gets short thrift in many parts of the world due to the w

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of April 2016)

10,000 Birds

After some weekends, we reflect on better views of birds we see all the time. Other times, however, find us smiling after seeing birds we haven’t seen in months. Are you smiling today? I didn’t wander far from home this weekend, but luckily a ton of new birds came to me. My favorites were the White-throated Sparrows who typically visit my feeders this time of year.

Biting the bullet or jumping the shark? A potential Baikal Wagtail in Germany

10,000 Birds

I recently saw and photographed what appears to be a Baikal Wagtail ( Motacilla alba-or-not baicalensis ) in Germany. If I am correct, this would apparently constitute a first record for the Western Palearctic. So it may turn out to be a bit of a big deal. Or a bit of a PR disaster for my birding skillz if I am not correct. So I guess some background wouldn’t hurt.

Flock Bronzewings

10,000 Birds

Flock Bronzewings Phaps histronica are an interesting bird that can show up in pairs or even large flocks on the odd occasion around Broome. It has been a few years since we have seen a large flock and in fact the last time we saw one close up it was a lone bird among the Plumed Whistling Ducks at the Derby Poo Ponds ! Other recent observations have been distant and until last Tuesday we had not had a good look at a pair of Flock Bronzewings for quite some time.
