I Remember Elephants

10,000 Birds

Late last month, while searching for bears , woodpeckers and spirits of Greece, I deliberately avoided checking any news, especially from my home country. Every now and then, I need to cut the world off and clear my mind. Nevertheless, only the most important news I did follow, those about the decision-making process on future sales of elephants and their ivory at a global wildlife summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, the first such meeting since 2013.

Leonard Nelson (1882-1927) on Duties to Animals

Animal Ethics

Moral philosophers, even those belonging to the Critical School [the followers of Kant and Fries], have often represented duties to animals as indirect duties to oneself or to other men. For instance, maltreatment of animals is forbidden on the ground that it encourages cruelty, that is, a disposition that obstructs fulfillment of duty. Now, maltreatment of animals may have just that effect; nevertheless the argument in question takes no account of the whole truth.

The Migrants are on their way back…

10,000 Birds

It is finally here, that glorious time of year, when our northern birding friends all say good bye to the beautiful bird species that have spent the summer with them. Our doldrums are over, and all the migrants are coming back to the warm summer climes for the winter. Just in the last few days, I have seen large numbers of arrivals, shorebirds and waders like Marbled Godwits, Greater Yellowlegs, Short-billed Dowitchers and the White-faced Ibis , as seen in the feature photo.

The Morning After: What 2017 and Beyond May Hold for U.S. Environmental Protections

10,000 Birds

Since I got literally three scattered hours of sleep last night—which is not enough for me, much less the mini-me inside who’s more than halfway to the hatching stage—this will be a brief but, I hope, somewhat coherent post. In the aftermath of yesterday’s election, thoughts turn naturally to what the next four years may bring. Likely of particular interest to 10,000 Birds readers, no matter their nationality, is that U.S. support for environmental protections and measures against climate change

Great Bowerbird bowers-Keep River National Park

10,000 Birds

Keep River National Park is situated just over the border when you leave Western Australia and enter the Northern Territory and is always worth stopping off at for a night or two. It offers several walks from the short walk at Cockatoo Lagoon near the entrance to the longer walks deeper into the park. The best walk for observing the rock art in the park that is accessible to the public is the Jinumun walk and it follows the bed of the Keep River to a site once used by the Miriwoong people as a s

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of November 2016?

10,000 Birds

Conservationists and nature lovers both in America and abroad may rightfully feel a sense of dread at the rumors of Sarah “Drill Baby Drill” Palin as our next Secretary of the Interior. With hope, that and many other of our worst nightmares will turn out to be mere figments of fear and pessimism. But if you wish to do more than worry, think about those organizations that fight tirelessly under every administration and regime to protect the natural world we treasure.

Rooi Els and Betty’s Bay

10,000 Birds

So, last time I promised to write about some of the other birding spots around Cape Town in South Africa. Rooi Els and Betty’s Bay are a great place to start. These are two small communities on the eastern edge of False Bay to the east of the city. The coastal road from the suburbs is spectacular, winding along hills overlooking the bay through fynbos (the endemic scrubland).

Vesper Sparrows in Queens

10,000 Birds

Every autumn I spend an inordinate amount of time examining the edges of fields, scrubby stands of brush, and everywhere else that little brown jobs, otherwise known as sparrows, might appear. Song Sparrows , White-throated Sparrows , Swamp Sparrows , Dark-eyed Juncos , Savannah Sparrows , and Chipping Sparrows are the most frequent birds to cross my field of view but White-crowned Sparrows , Field Sparrows , Lincoln’s Sparrows , and Fox Sparrows aren’t uncommon.
