However, in this post, I’d like to lay out the basic numbers as we pretend to know them about overall bird mortality, human related causes of mortality, and somewhere in there I’ll note that the number of birds that are killed by windmills is so small that it says “zero” on my pie chart.

The book teaches a technique called needle felting. There is a list of all the tools and supplies that you will need to make cute dogs. I also loved the step by step photos in the book, which makes it easy for beginners or experts to follow.

'Last week here at 10,000 Birds we did a theme week called “ Extinction Week.” We covered a wide variety of topics but to me the most important was the one that David Ringer covered. His topic was the report recently issued by the Audubon Society where the organization claimed 314 species of birds in the United States and Canada are threatened by climate change. 314!

Fortunately, Monday morning is a fine time to catch up on what you missed over the weekend! My Best Bird of the Weekend was a turkey, actually several Wild Turkeys. While I see turkeys intermittently all year long, these birds really look best in autumn sunlight.

'In the few weeks we have been in Palmerston I have been enjoying some great birds and the cycling paths are particularly good and generally I can avoid cycling on the road. There is one very busy road to cross to get to Marlow Lagoon and at certain times of day it is near impossible and in those situations I generally avoid attempting it and cycle somewhere else.

'North of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens is a middle class neighborhood, predominantly Italian-American, known as Howard Beach. Named for William J. Howard, a Brooklynite who owned a goat farm in the area in the 1890s, the neighborhood was essentially founded by Howard’s creation of the Howard Estates Development Company, which dredged and filled enough land on which to build a neighborhood.

'Laid out as I was with some nasty virus for most of my trip to Sydney, a lot of the excursions I planned for that week kind of fell by the wayside. I wouldn’t even say the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak, because the spirit had been pretty badly drained by the whole thing too. But there was one trip I wasn’t going to miss, a midweek excursion by the Cumberland Bird Observers Club , the people to go out with in Sydney if you want birds.
