My friend Nina is an animal lover. All her pets are rescues. She keeps her cats inside. Unless she is accompanying her dog, he stays in a fenced-in area. She doesn’t use pesticides, she loves the local wildlife, and she does everything a good pet owner should do. But one day, unbeknownst to her, a wild rabbit dug under the fence. She let her dog out, he spotted the rabbit, and took off like a bullet.

We are in search of the warm and sunny climate that Mexico has to offer. I have seen dozens of Snowy Plovers and other shorebirds along the Emerald Coast of Florida, but until last week I had never seen their chicks! Nesting season has been underway for weeks here, and I was becoming worried I would never catch a glimpse of their tiny forms. Luckily, I met with wildlife staff from Eglin Air Force Base as part of my job, and they agreed to take me on one of their nest surveys.

It’s June, it’s solstice time, it’s when the kids run out the front door of school screaming in jubilation. At least we did that back during the late 70s and 80s. There is no denying the fact that birders are a discriminating bunch. This seems to apply especially to birders in North American since most European birders couldn’t discriminate between a Marsh and a Reed Warbler to save their life, but even here in the good old Europe, our hearts are impure – mine included. Of course I am aware that all birds are created equal, but I’ll be honest: I just can’t get overly excited about terns.

Having spent several weeks in the bush in remote areas south of Broome I have plenty to share, so choosing a place to start is hard!
