Unethical Photographers Bait Critically Endangered Eagles

10,000 Birds

10,000 Birds readers love terrific bird photography but hate bird abuse. That’s why reader Charlie Gordon wanted to share this disturbing story. Charlie is an amateur nature photographer from Singapore who has been birdwatching for close to 15 years now. He was first drawn to birding after realising that even the most urbanised spaces could harbour relatively high levels of bird diversity, and now spends time exploring other birding habitats around the region.

Birding for the Curious: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Birding for the Curious: The Easiest Way for Anyone to Explore the Incredible World of Birds by Nate Swick brings birding back to its roots—a simple, joyous way to enjoy nature using our eyes, ears, hands (for sketching), and brain. Not that Nate eschews technology—he unabashedly urges beginning birders to eBird—but he views it as one element of a total package that anybody can engage in if they have that one ingredient—a willingness to learn.

The Four Goshawks

10,000 Birds

Entering some old data at eBird, I found myself puzzled with one record. I was canoeing the Danube backwaters inside Belgrade, Serbia, on a warm and sunny November day when a Northern Goshawk tried to catch one of two Pygmy Cormorants. The year was 1996 and it must have been quite a sight – if I only could remember it! But no, that sighting is no longer in my head, only on paper.

What is the State Bird of New Jersey?

10,000 Birds

Mentioning New Jersey often raises a snicker or a run down of all the drama and negative stereotypes that swirl around the Garden State, most of which are typified by the MTV hit show, “Jersey Shore.” While certain New Jersey decisions may be dubious, their state bird, the American Goldfinch, is a beautiful choice. The legislature named the goldfinch the state bird in 1935 , sharing the designation with Washington and Iowa.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of August 2015)

10,000 Birds

The last weekend of August reminds us that the seasons don’t only carry phenological significance. As eager as birders are for the beginning of fall migration, many parents are even more excited (some would say desperate ) for the start of school. Yes, this is a big week in my part of the world! As feared, work kept me from appreciating the richness of avian diversity in western New York, but luckily a juvenile Baltimore Oriole crossed my path to provide something fun to observe.

Twitching Solitaire En Masse

10,000 Birds

In the past, I’ve been fairly hesitant about taking my two young children with me on longer birding excursions. I don’t want to burn them out on long car rides to less than exciting locations, but mostly i don’t want to have to deal with crabby kids begging me to go home when I’m busy seeking out a new state bird. If I want my children to be birders, or at least to appreciate birding, I need them to have good experiences doing it with me.

San Francisco – short of time and money.

10,000 Birds

Redgannet, the blog, has taken a back seat while 10,000 Birds does most of the driving and Mrs Gannet does the navigating, so it has slightly lost its way over the last year or so. However, my latest trip reminded me that when an out-of-town birder arrives in a strange city (in this case San Francisco ) pertinent information should be to hand. If you have the time, a car and a GPS map thingy, then eBird can provide you with hotspots, lists and barcharts.

Red-necked Phalarope on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

Late morning this past Thursday, 27 August, I was on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay. I was only there because I had worked an overnight and therefore had the day free from work and Desi was busy at a day camp. It was well past high tide so I wasn’t expecting too much, but I did want to see if I could get some decent shots of the Western Sandpipers and White-rumped Sandpipers that had been hanging out a bit north of the Raunt in a wet, grassy area.

Pentecost River birding

10,000 Birds

On our trip to the north of Western Australia we took the opportunity to visit the Pentecost River, which is south of Wyndham and is near the start of the infamous Gibb River Road. The Gibb River Road is a mostly gravel road that runs approximately 670 kilometres from south of Wyndham to Derby in the west. We have explored the western end of the Gibb River Road over the years, but had never been to the Pentecost River on the eastern end.

Show me the money

10,000 Birds

New Zealand is currently in the grip of a government mandated rebranding episode. Most notably the flag is under review, apparently the existing one is deficient for the crimes of “being too Australian” “being to British” and “not sufficiently rugby related” As such the government launched a contest to find a new flag and then proceeded to ignore all the interesting designs in favour of some flags that were like the All Black flag.
