Birding and Safari-ing South Africa with the ABA

10,000 Birds

'I wanted Penguins. And Sunbirds. And Flamingos and Hornbills and a Secretarybird and birds with names like Hamerkop and Thick-knee and Eremomela (which I know is a scientific term, but which, when pronounced correctly, reminds me of a Yiddish term of endearment my grandmother used). And so, I went on the American Birding Association Safari to South Africa.

How Do You Stop Ravens From Destroying Your Car?

10,000 Birds

'A good friend of my mother’s back in my hometown of Saugerties, New York, is having a problem. She and her coworkers have had their cars besieged by Common Ravens. The ravens rip apart their windshield wipers and destroy the rubber seals that keep their cars waterproof. Now, this is not an unknown problem. In south Florida, Black Vultures attack cars ; in Australia, it’s Black Crows ; in Canada, American Crows.

Wallcreeper in New York!

10,000 Birds

'Well maybe it’s just a Brown Creeper on a wall. But that’s still interesting, right? Right? Fine. It’s not anywhere near as interesting as one of those amazing pink-winged Wallcreepers showing up in New York. But I was still fascinated by the behavior of this Brown Creeper that I observed in the midst of a driving rainstorm on Saturday morning at Jacob Riis Park in Queens.

Python Caves and the Very Dangerous Bats

10,000 Birds

'I had planned to do another story today, but my laptop, sick of endless David Attenborough DVDs, Skyrim and searches of birding in South Africa made a break for it and took a swan dive off my bed. The resulting damage to the screen means that I am exiled back to my very ancient desktop. And my lack of backups (yes, yes, I know) mean that for the moment my recent photos are trapped, at least until I get off my bum and get the damn thing fixed.

Review of iBird Ultimate 7.2

10,000 Birds

'I initially bought iBird Pro in one of its earlier versions for one reason and one reason only. Bird vocalizations. If I was going out looking for a rarity or even just for a bird that I hadn’t seen (or heard) in awhile I would play the songs and, especially, the chip notes prior to getting into the field to ensure that if the bird called I would recognize it.

Birds + Bikes

10,000 Birds

'Look in the middle, just over the trees: there’s a big flock of birds up there. Same thing with the photo below. So: on a beautiful fall afternoon, my friend Ardal and I decided to go to for a bike ride. Bike rides with Ardal are not for the faint of heart; certainly not for those who haven’t ridden a bicycle since they were 12. The first time we rode together, with me on another friend’s mountain bike, the “short ride” turned out to be ten miles.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of November 2014)

10,000 Birds

'With this weekend consumed by Halloween excitement, bats were more easily encountered than birds. How did you fare? Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a relatively common species though it was uncommonly cooperative. A juvenile White-crowned Sparrow is an expected bird in late fall in New York State but it is always nice when one sits still for a digiscoping session.

The Spotted Towhee – One of the Five Towhees of the West

10,000 Birds

'The Spotted Towhee ( Pipilo maculatus ) is probably the most common of the five western Towhees of North America. They occupy the scrubby thickets of the northern Great Plains, middle elevations of mountains and intermountain plateaus, and Pacific coastal lowlands and offshore islands. I spotted this male recently in a friend’s yard (click on photos for full sized images) … along with several Steller’s Jays ( Cyanocitta stelleri) … Golden-crowned Sparrows ( Zonotrich

Fall Migration on Facebook

10,000 Birds

'Fall migration comes and goes, in Florida, a little too fast. The first Semipalmated Sandpiper and Sanderling along the shores of Florida’s Treasure Coast announce the beginning of a new season. The fall migration is underway. The first shorebird arrivals are apparently birds that failed at a breeding attempt and don’t have time to re-attempt; they might as well head south early.

Durack Lakes, Palmerston

10,000 Birds

'Over the past few weeks I have introduced you to some of the birding available in Palmerston in the Northern Territory and it has been a great city for us to find birds. I have been able to cycle around the various lakes and lagoons during the day and in the late evening Grant has been able to join me to observe the birds that I have found. The city has been designed with thought and allows for the residents to be able to walk or cycle throughout the suburbs with ease.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of November 2014?

10,000 Birds

'Think you’ll find birds at a place called Jacana Lodge ? The most famous November poem I know of was written a long time ago by Thomas Hood: No sun – no moon! No morn – no noon -. No dawn – no dusk – no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member -. No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds!
