'Tropical birding demands tropical birds, those families and genera unique to their latitudes rather than shared via migration across various climate zones. The American tropics surely have their share of orioles, warblers, doves, jays, and other types of birds that birders as far north as Canada or even the Arctic Circle might encounter. Sometimes, they even have the same species… I’m looking at you, House Wren !

'This past weekend I was disconnected from the internet, stuck in the woods without electricity, reduced to sleeping in a shelter made of fabric, and cooked meals over an open fire. No, I wasn’t being punished, the apocalypse had not come, and I was putting myself through these privations voluntarily! That’s right, I, along with my family and some really good friends, was camping.

'Whether the inspiration to this post came from Germany winning the U19 European football championship yesterday right on the heels of our (adult) team winning the world cup (Yes! Four stars!!), or from Coreys small series on national birds is left for you to decide. Regardless of what may have been my motivation, all eagles are exceptionally amazing birds that will scarcely ever fail to impress lucky birders.

'We are lucky enough here in Broome to have a pair of Barking Owls that have chosen to roost in town. Over the years there have been Barking Owls observed in the Town Beach area and the Courthouse gardens and we have heard them “barking” at home as well. They are large birds at approximately 40cm/16 inches and therefore quite visible in tall open trees.

'As the summer heats up, we birders are already looking ahead to returning passage migrants and waiting impatiently for the cooler temperatures that bring our respective winter visitors. The prime cause of my impatience is the Bohemian Waxwing. Seldom does a bird live up to its billing as well as this one. I suspect that I was the last person in the UK to get the waxwing tick after missing 2 good irruption years, but eventually my incompetence paid off when a flock was reported in a small villag

'Since I live not very far from Greece, I have often combined my vacation there with birding. As the time passed on, I started combining birding with vacation. And, finally, this spring I combined birding with – birding. That is a winning combination. I have a handful of Greece travel guides (not that I am happy with any of them), but what I always missed was a specialised bird-finding guide.

'Summer weather ain’t what it used to be around these parts. An ill-timed polar vortex has sucked all the heat– and fun – out of mid-summer. At least the birds seem to appreciate the clement weather! For once, I was pleased to see our omnipresent local Ring-billed Gulls this weekend, since I realized I didn’t see a single larid while in Colombia.

'I’m in Sydney for a week of family, birding, diving and enjoying the subtropical climate. Okay, it may not be that hot, but it can’t be worse than Wellington. To celebrate this I thought I’d do a shout out to the great birds of Sydeny. Not the good, hard to find specialties that the Gods of Birding use to reward pious birders for getting up before dawn, but the amazing birds that anyone can see in this city.

'We love our stuff, stuff being the term affectionately given to the objects with which we populate our lives. In birding, we like to think that we don’t need much ‘stuff’. Just give us binoculars, a field guide, and a hat to keep out the sun and rain. Maybe a spotting scope. And a long lens camera. Some memory cards for that camera. Another book, maybe a bird finding guide.
