Nisqually Delta Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

The last weekend of January found me in the frosty Pacific Northwest, meeting some long over due work and family obligations. This is not to say that there wasn’t a little birding time snuck in here and there. I did manage to spend a chilly Saturday morning at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of February 2017)

10,000 Birds

Another Super Bowl has passed and, as predicted , the feathered team fell short. Birds are amazing for a host of reasons, but bringing luck to sports teams may not be their strong suit. My weekend was rather prosaic from a birding perspective, but I took time to appreciate some local Mourning Doves , distinctive not just for their early sunrise plumage but for their species success; I found these doves as plentiful in lush Caribbean forests as they are in Rochester’s inclement winterscape.

Familiar Feathered Friends on Okaloosa Island

10,000 Birds

“Well, darn it,” I thought to myself as I stepped out of the office to face a line of traffic. I had big plans to go to the gym before meeting my husband for dinner, and a car accident promised a long wait if I dared get into my car (trust me, I had more sympathy for those in the accident than I did for my schedule). Exercise-wise, I had other options as I work right next to the beach, and I slipped on my walking shoes to take a stroll down the sand.

Backyard Birdfeeder Bragging Rights, a Great Adventure for a Great Twitch, and More: This Week in Birding News

10,000 Birds

Let us no more speak of this week’s extraordinary failure by a cast of Falcons to finish off their prey. Instead, we’ve got other bird news to cheer us up (or at least take our minds off avian’s inexplicable inability to capture U.S. sports championships ). Breeding bird surveys appears to show the resplendent Allen’s Hummingbird (like Corey’s capture, above) in decline—but not in Southern California, where examination of eBird data reveals that members of a residential population appear to

Jochen’s 2017 year list

10,000 Birds

Yes, here it is, another attempt at keeping a year list. I started keeping year lists – not just blogging about them but really keeping track of what I see each year – as late as 2012, roughly 30 years into my birding career. Back then, in 2012, the motivation was to have something nice to blog about and to show Corey how the cow eats the cabbage since he was seeing too many good species too easily.

Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago: Greater Sundas and Wallacea–A Field Guide Review

10,000 Birds

I’ve never been to the Indonesian Archipelago, but I really like the birds there. From Great Argus to Coucal to Frogmouth, from Hornbill to Cockatoo to Pitta, from Whistler to Paradise-flycatcher to Jungle-flycatcher to Sunbird (I could go on and on), these are the birds we dream about, the bird names that conjure up fantasies of color and sound amidst jungles, mountain paths, volcanic craters, and magic lakes.

Birding under stormy skies

10,000 Birds

We have missed out on a good Wet Season in Broome for a few years now and finally we are catching up with much needed rain. Finally the ephemeral lakes are full after being dry last year after very little rainfall. In fact they are so full they are either not accessible or they are so full it would take hours to circumnavigate them without getting wet feet.

Birding Innsbruck, Austria in Winter

10,000 Birds

Before my trip to Austria that bridged January and February, I had never really had that country high on my list of places I wanted to go. What I knew of Austria was very little: The Sound of Music, mountains and skiing, Vienna, Hitler’s birthplace, Krampus, good beer, and often confused with Australia. Other than the beer and Vienna there is very little there to draw my interest.

The Collaborative List 2017 – January.

10,000 Birds

Protests were organised, banners were waved, petitions were signed and 6 of the beats have been banned from entering their data. Nevertheless, The Management has made it clear, in menacing tones and with a flourish on an executive order, that the list will continue. For 2017, in keeping with all the top businesses, the list will be refreshed and re-branded.

Black Woodpecker: Officially a Nemesis

10,000 Birds

I have never before had a true nemesis bird. Sure, occasionally a bird has given me problems, like Black-backed Woodpeckers back in 2007 when I was doing an alleged Big Year in New York State, but not seeing a bird for a single year does not make it a nemesis. But Black Woodpecker ? Well, here is what I wrote about the worst woodpecker a couple of years ago : This is a bird that has eluded me on two trips to Germany – both of which included exploring forests where they were supposed to be presen

Gadwall Courtship Displays

10,000 Birds

I spent a few hours in the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge blind #1 last weekend and filmed the following video of Gadwalls ( Anus strepera ) engaged in courtship displays. According to Birds of North America Online , 97% of female Gadwall are paired by November. These pairs of ducks are obviously strengthening their pair bonds at this point. Here is the list of “Courtship Displays” from BNA Online: Introductory Shake.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of February 2017?

10,000 Birds

Rolling into the second weekend of February should remind us that even the most misanthropic birders can feel love for more than just the thrill of observing avifauna. Valentine’s Day may be, in many ways, merely a Hallmark holiday, but why miss an opportunity to celebrate the humans you love. Don’t worry… birds will always be there for you!
