And then, two canids appeared in my scope field of view… My plan was that the downpour should finally be over in the morning, so I could go birding. The rain had plans of its own and now, 36 hours later, it is still going strong. However, I am a stubborn person. In a boring drizzle, I am driving along the dyke that separates the Danube backwaters from the arable fields (the only dyke in the area where driving is allowed).

New York has wonderful birds. I love New York’s birds with a passion, from the parti-colored pigeons to the spring warbler fiesta to Jamaica Bay’s herons and ibises (but not the sandpipers. Never the sandpipers.). Still, there’s something about the moment, at six am, when two Sandhill Cranes stand tall out of the marsh grass and set up a back-and-forth call that echoes off the mountains.

Much of the United States labors under what is being called a heat dome , and that doesn’t even touch on the flames being set off by our political conventions. As the temperatures rise, I like to think about crisp blue glaciers, like the ones I saw ages ago in Alaska. But then I recall all those wasted opportunities and how I wasn’t even birding back then; the way I feel hardly qualifies as cool.

When I was 12 or 13, I was given a hand-me-down camera, and started taking pictures, It was at this point, or at least very close to it, that I started pointing camera at birds. To this day, there is still that one early photo, a Forrester’s tern, caught beautifully in flight, every feather in amazing detail, that is the basis for my start. Birds, and my photography have been linked now for nearly 50 years, and I am just starting to feel like I am on to something.

New Orleans. The Big Easy. NOLA. There’s no doubt that it is one of the most famous cities in the south, and I spent 24 hours there over the weekend! While I did not go NOLA to bird specifically, I always keep my eyes out. The Garden District. I arrived with my cousin and husband Saturday evening, checking into our room at the Crescent Palms and taking an Uber into the city.

This weekend, millions of people, young and old alike, were driven to explore the most unlikely corners of the world in a relentless, unquenchable thirst to track down species they hadn’t ticked before. And some of the rest of us went birding! But whether you’re questing for Pokémon or birds, at least you got outside. My week on the shores of Lake Michigan resulted in the same birds I enjoy on the shores of Lake Ontario.

This past Saturday morning, 15 July, I was at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at 5:30 AM, heading out onto the East Pond in order to see shorebirds for high tide, which was going to occur at roughly 6:30 AM. Interactions between birds and Man are not news to many of you. My mother’s favourite sight is a tractor being followed by gulls as it ploughs the autumn fields. She even asked me to draw her such a scene as a birthday present (you must understand that she is a very indulgent parent and was apparently delighted with this 8-year-old’s efforts).

On our camping trip into the more southern areas of Western Australia we spent two nights camping at Bilyuin Pool on the way south and again on the way back north. It was a very quiet area with plentiful bird-life and despite some rather inclement weather in June we really enjoyed the peacefulness of the bush there. Bilyuin Pool is at the site of the old Bilyuin Hotel, which is now in ruin and the pool is the remains of the Murchison River in the winter months.
