Portrait of a Redtail with Grey Hoodie String

10,000 Birds

'What follows will not be elegant artspeak about how certain photographers can capture not only the beauty but the spirit of wild birds, although my friend Russ Cusick , who took these photos, has certainly produced some of my favorite avian images. Cooperative Connecticut Warbler in Queens

10,000 Birds

'After work on Friday I decided to stop at Strack Pond at the western edge of Forest Park, where wood-warblers had been around in numbers recently. Upon my arrival I ran into Danny Melore and Andrew Baksh, both of whom were impressed by the variety of wood-warblers around, which were feeding on the abundant insect life. Join Me for a Big Sit in Queens!

10,000 Birds

'On Sunday, 12 October, I’ll be in one spot all day long from predawn until post-sunset. Birds Are Gumming Up the (Public) Works

10,000 Birds

'As bird lovers, we’re happy that laws exist to protect birds, and that people are especially looking after protected species. But sometimes, what’s best for the birds and what’s best for the humans collide. In the United States, a few of those conundrums are making news. In the New York metro area, not-quite-hurricane Sandy unleashed a significant amount of devastation back in October 2012, with storm surge and severe flooding along shorelines.

'As some of you may be aware, I spend a lot of time on aeroplanes, working my way to exotic locations and then stumbling around, bleary-eyed, enjoying the natural wonders that this week’s destination has to offer. All this travelling means lots of packing and packing means compromise. Baggage allowance, airport security and lack of Sherpas force me consider carefully what I will need to bring and what can be dispensed with.

Keep Your Eyes on the Trail: Mad Cow Edition

'One reason so many of us love birding is that the activity engages all of our senses. McMinns Lagoon Recreation Reserve

'There are a lot of water bodies with crocodiles in when you are visiting the Northern Territory and careful consideration needs to be taken about that fact before you wander too close to the water.
