'Nature lovers, rejoice! The National Park Service is finally going to remove the feral cat colony from Plumb Beach, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Signs like the one above went up late last week. Seeing as Plumb Beach is a known stopover area for large numbers of shorebirds, a known breeding area for a variety of saltmarsh species, including Clapper Rails , and habitat for a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, insects, and other bird species, this is a long overdue move.

'These days I am busy with something called the “avitourism product“ of Belgrade, Serbia. Yes there are birding sites and there are birds – but hardly much info about them (beside Fat Birder ). When discussing this topic for local media, I often say that because of their White-tailed Eagles , the Scottish island of Mull makes 2 million pounds per year from birders alone.

'There was a time when albatross taxonomy was quite simple. Actually, I lie, albatross taxonomy has always been a mess, but there was a period of relative calm, from the sixties to the ninties, when there were about 12 species in two genera. Then taxonomists started using DNA to look at albatrosses, and everyone knows nothing good comes from that. Suddenly there were lots of species, and most confusingly of all, never the same number or types in each book or resource you looked at.

'Keeps your eyes to the skies. Maybe you’ll see albatrosses ! Many civilized nations choose the third weekend in June to honor fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. In response, many fathers elect to celebrate their paternity by ditching their progeny. Is this civilized behavior? I wouldn’t go that far but will point out that you’ll see a lot more birds if you leave the kids at home!

'Earlier this spring I spent some time exploring some parks in Queens that I had never visited before. I know, I know, it is hard to believe that there were parks left in Queens that had never been graced by my presence but somehow a couple of locations had escaped my notice. One of those parks, Brookville Park in southeastern Queens, was noteworthy to me because I saw several early Yellow-crowned Night-Herons there, the first that were reported in the state this year.

'Let’s have a show of hands from everyone living north of the Equator: did you barbecue this weekend? Did you want to? (If you’re wondering, yes, I did, and, yes, I wanted to do it some more!). I enjoyed the opportunity to drag my screen-time loving kids outdoors, which was enhanced considerably by the arrival of a singing male Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

'While we are away in the Southern Highlands trying to keep warm and enjoying the bird species of that area I will share with you some of our local Broome birds. One of the hardest of the Honeyeaters to photograph in our garden is the Rufous-throated Honeyeater. They are more likely to be diving into our water baths than just drinking and even when they do drink they are fast and a real challenge.

'On Saturday I awakened at 3:30 AM, tiptoed out of the house as quietly as I could, and headed north and west to Sullivan County, the first of three counties I planned to visit in a series of surgical birding strikes to see (or hear) the birds I had thus far missed this year as they migrated through New York City. Sullivan County was my first stop because I was hoping to hear some of the secretive freshwater marsh birds that are often difficult to find.

'Please excuse an indulgent “been here, saw this” post. It was my first time to Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve and I fell in love almost immediately. The crime is that it is less than 40 miles from my home and since I moved to the area 12 years ago, I have ignored suggestions that I visit. On this maiden trip, I only walked about a quarter of the circuit that takes in lakes, reedbeds, meadows and the River Stour before I had to turn back.
