Buff-breasted Sandpiper Overload (and Other Fall Birding Highlights in Costa Rica)

10,000 Birds

“Tis the season for migration, bi bi bi bi bird, bi bird bi bird.” This little ditty should be sung using the melody for “Deck the Halls”, and now would be the time to intone it, at least in Costa Rica. If you were trying to pick out Blackburnian Warblers and other migrants from the September foliage in Central Park, the shores of Ohio, or any other sites in the north a few weeks ago, a fair number of those birds have now made it to Costa Rica.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of October 2016)

10,000 Birds

Around here, October feels a lot like March in reverse. The month eases you in, docile as a lamb, but promises to bite you on the back end. Hope you took advantage of one of the more gentle weekends this month has to offer. I enjoyed autumnal splendor down in rural Pennsylvania at that perfect moment when lush green foliage begins to mix with brilliant red, orange, and gold.

Falcon on the Roof

10,000 Birds

I’ve written before about the surprising and sometimes lovely variety of forms that the simple Rock Pigeon can take, and how much fun there is in simply through sorting through a flock – like the one that inevitably gathers around the dumpsters of the grocery store a block from my apartment and wages a battle of attrition with the paint job of every car that parks on the street.

Britain’s Birds: An Identification Guide to the Birds of Britain and Ireland–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

British birders are very serious about birding and their birds. This is a very good thing; it means they publish a lot of books about birds (probably more at this point than U.S. publishers); they host something called a Birdfair that maybe someday 10,000 Birds will send me to visit; they produce outstanding birders, some of whom come over to the U.S. and share their expertise , or do big years or write excellent blog posts.

Come On Hollywood

10,000 Birds

A few weeks ago, I settled down into the couch with my husband to watch a little television before bed. One of my favorite shows is The Big Bang Theory, a quirky sitcom about scientists living in California. In addition to owning the first few seasons, I adore re-runs, and luckily TBS obliges me with regularly scheduled new and old episodes. The theme of this particular episode was Sheldon’s fear of birds.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of October 2016?

10,000 Birds

October reminds me a bit of March in terms of weather, but the migratory action makes this month more akin to May or June. Many birds are still on the move, which makes this weekend an ideal time to be outdoors. Plan accordingly. I’ll be entertaining friends who don’t feel as fondly about nature as I do, but a trip to Niagara Falls may turn up some worthy sightings.

Birding at a Quarry in the Kimberley

10,000 Birds

Quarry birding is rewarding anywhere in the world, but in the Kimberley it can often be the last place that birds can find water after months with no rain. Often the quarries are very picturesque too as you can see above and below! This particular quarry north of Fitzroy Crossing was almost dry when we last visited, but not dry enough that there were no birds at all.

Ingrid Taylar: Bridging the Divide Between Cat and Bird Lovers

10,000 Birds

This blog is written by writer, photographer, and animal advocate Ingrid Taylar. Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird. A sweet Mourning Dove , his crop stuffed with seeds from a feeder, struck gold when he landed atop a pile of millet and sunflower. Now, he lay frightened and ruffled in my hands, his tail tattered, his feathers damp from the maw of a cat named Puck.

Budgerigars Reveal the Rules of the Road

10,000 Birds

Or is that the rules of the air? (As demonstrated by the flock of Budgerigars , above and below, photographed earlier this year by Clare). While you were whistling at your aunt’s caged pet parakeet, you probably had no idea that it was a mastermind of flight. But Australian scientists, studying Budgies in the wild, have discovered a few simple rules that seem to dictate how flying birds avoid careening into each other : They veer right, like drivers in the United States.

Combined Beats’ List – September

10,000 Birds

Duncan has been in Africa, sweeping all before him like a brush fire. Through Botswana during the first week of September, then into Ethiopia with a late flourish, he has carried the list to 2191 as at September 30t h. Redgannet missed an opportunity to contribute when he was completely washed out at Lekki Conservation Centre in Nigeria. Electric storms closed the new walkway there and he amassed a total list of just 3 birds!
