The Smell of Napalm in the Morning

10,000 Birds

Photo: This area holds 3 to 4 breeding pairs of White-tailed Eagles , which represents the biggest density per square mile anywhere in the country. Photographed by Szekeres Levente. Several European Honey-buzzards and several hundred European Bee-eaters are filling the sunny sky above the wetland. I am driving by the Beljarica (a.k.a. Crvenka) floodplain , north of Belgrade, along the dyke lined by “the cubicles”, a series of square ponds created when the soil was dug to build the embankment.

The Grey-Hairs: Growing Old with Pets

4 The Love Of Animals

Guest author Katie Kapro holds her MFA in nonfiction writing. When walking around town, she often finds herself talking to more dogs than people. Binkie cringes when I call her dog Mick Jagger. “Mickey,” she corrects. “His name is Mickey.” … Continue reading → The post The Grey-Hairs: Growing Old with Pets appeared first on 4 The Love of Animals.

The Kite Run

10,000 Birds

To say that my birding has been limited this year is an understatement. My spring and early summer were sucked away from me by the work involved in producing a new field guide to the Carolinas. That project is mostly complete now, but life has a way of stealing that time you’d rather spend birding, and the oppressively hot summer has made the prospect of standing out in the buggy wilderness staring at messy molting birds and squawking fledglings less than appealing.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of September 2016?

10,000 Birds

The first weekend of September brings birders in the United States three potential prizes: great birds, great weather, and a three-day weekend to enjoy them. If you’re not facing down a natural or personal disaster, you may just hit the jackpot… enjoy! I’m heading out to the New York State Fair this weekend; perhaps the artists in residence have sculpted a bird out of butter.

Bay Bluff Park is for the Birds

10,000 Birds

With all my recent traveling up and down the eastern United States, I have had almost zero time to bird in my “home territory.” During my first full week at home in months, I vowed to change that with a visit to a new (to me) park. Bay Bluffs Park in Pensacola, FL looks out over the beautiful Escambia Bay. The parking lot is high above the beach, wooden boardwalks and staircases taking my husband and I down and down and down and down.

Birds of San Juan De La Costa

10,000 Birds

When you travel north of La Paz, Mexico, staying on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja, you will encounter the phosphate mines of San Juan De La Costa. The first 35 miles of this trip are all on a very nice, two lane paved highway. After you pass the mine, things change quite a bit. The road becomes a minimally maintained dirt road, with a well developed, brain jarring wash-board like surface.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of August 2016)

10,000 Birds

While nations, groups, and individuals all over the world observe time in their own particular ways, the world comes together under the idiosyncratic structure of the Gregorian calendar. And as these final days of the month named for the first Roman emperor play out, we can each take stock of how we’ve spent or squandered the first two-thirds of the year.

Langi Crossing birding part two

10,000 Birds

Following on from last week’s post about Langi Crossing and some of the larger birds species that you can expect to find I will now let you know of some of the smaller species you may encounter along the Fitzroy River at this location. A combination of larger and smaller species on each visit provided about eighty species on each of three recent visits, but the species did vary slightly on each visit.

48 and counting

10,000 Birds

As one of Britain’s most abundant birds, the Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus should have made it onto my yard list much earlier than this. With around 3 million pairs on a small island, they can be found in any habitat that offers a bit of light woodland. They are not shy and they like to sing during the spring, so missing them until now is quite an oversight on my part.
