Save the Painted Bunting, y’all: Keep wonder alive

10,000 Birds

'Everyone, the Painted Bunting needs your help. There’s a new proposal before the American Ornithologists’ Union’s North American Classification Committee to split Painted Bunting into two species (yay! — maybe, more later) and to name the new species “Eastern Painted Bunting” and “Western Painted Bunting” (no!).

#DogProblems giveaway!

4 The Love Of Animals

'The team at Purina Veterinary Diets is igniting a conversation around common #DogProblems, like gas (oh, dog gas can be almost deadly, can’t it?!). The hope is to get concerned owners to talk to their vet about pet food allergies – they even created a Symptom Checker for people to learn more about the topic. They are also taking a humorous approach, creating some funny dog memes about common dog problems.

Requiem for a Bird Guide: Hugo Haroldo Enriquez Toledo

10,000 Birds

'Any birdwatcher who has traveled widely knows that the success of an birding expedition depends far more on who is charge of finding birds than on the birds themselves. Where an average guide makes you feel like you have front row seats to a special show, a truly great birding guide pulls back the curtain and takes you backstage to hobnob with the stars.

Phillipps’ Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

'The danger of reviewing a field guide to the birds of an exotic country you’ve never been to is that you become obsessed with visiting that country, no matter how far away and how expensive it may be. So, when Redgannet asked me if I was interested in reviewing Phillipps’ Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo: Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan, Third Edition , by Quentin Phillipps and Karen Phillipps, a book he had acquired at Birdfair, I hesitated.

The Ole’ Bucket List

10,000 Birds

'Well, this time next week I’ll be winging my way to Cape Town via Auckland and Singapore (air transport is weird sometimes), so this is my last beat post of the year. As New Zealand’s beat writer I think I’ve done an okay job of discussing the birding of an entirely different island for most of the year, so it’s only fair that I keep that winning streak going by talking about my target for the trip.

Things to See on a Sunny Day at Virgen del Socorro, Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

'Sunny days sound like oh so pleasant weather but they just don’t jive with birding in the tropics. Walk out there beneath the blazing sun and it feels like the non-stop beat of a laser-mallet right on top of the head. This is why we wear hats, especially the wide-brimmed ones, and we wear them with pride. This is also why we don’t expect to see many birds on a sunny day in Costa Rica.

Black Vultures in the Cross Hairs

10,000 Birds

'Black vultures (Coragyps atratus) are among the most polarizing birds. They fulfill and important ecological and sanitary role by consuming dead, often diseased animals, as well as human generated organic waste. But as their numbers increase, so are the instances where human and Black vultures come in conflict. Black vultures have increased in numbers throughout the species extensive geographic range, and this increase seems to correlate to the human population growth.

My large Pied Oystercatcher family

10,000 Birds

'Having found my large Pied Oystercatcher family last week I have spent a lot of time with them this week. I am not sure when they will tell the three young birds to go on their way, so I am making the most of the time I can spend with them now observing them. The parents moved them from their breeding territory as soon as they could fly, which makes sense because you don’t want them to eat all of the food that you will need to survive until the next breeding season.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of December 2014?

10,000 Birds

'Did you survive the double-barreled assault of Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Before you judge rabid deal hunters and conspicuous consumers too harshly, imagine how long you might wait on line for special deals on rare bird sightings? How early in the morning would you wake up for a guaranteed fallout of migrants? Winging It In Tulsa

10,000 Birds

'“OOOOOOOklahoma where the birds come sweepin’ down the plain…” I know – it’s supposed to be the wind, not the birds. No matter. I recently traveled to Oklahoma to help spread the word of wildlife, finding all kinds of adventure along the way. Since wildlife rehabilitators are in short supply wherever you go, we tend to forge internet friendships; then the fact that our closest compatriots may live thousands of miles away isn’t such a problem.

The Wild and Crazy Emu

10,000 Birds

'The Emu is the second largest living bird in the world by height, second only to the Ostrich. It is also the largest bird native to Australia 1. They can be rather intimidating when they are close up and looking at you eye to eye. Click on photos for full sized images. On my way to do some maintenance on the artificial Burrowing Owl habitat we installed in Anderson a few years ago, I spotted a pair of Emu grazing in a large open field.
