The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation and Who Pays for It

10,000 Birds

'The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation (NAMWC) is often held up as the best system of wildlife management and conservation in the world. Developed in the post-frontier era, the NAMWC helped put a stop to wanton wildlife destruction in an era where many species were being hunted and trapped ruthlessly to the brink of extinction. But the tenets of the North American Model were developed in the 19th century, when wildlife ethics and science were a mere glimmer of what we understand toda

Rescue Spotlight: Best Friends Parrot Garden

4 The Love Of Animals

'The Parrot Garden is a special spot at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Pet birds often end up losing their homes, just like dogs and cats. Many of them have special needs, especially because of their long life spans. Dancing Party Animals

4 The Love Of Animals

'Dancing Party Animals are cute dancing animals (with a speaker) that connect to your favorite music playing device! Plug in your music, and watch them start to move and groove. They will dance until the music stops. They have a lot of fun animals to choose from. We were sent a dancing cat and a dancing dog. One alone is a lot of fun, but watching them dance together was even more fun!

Hummingbirds in Costa Rica Love the Rain

10,000 Birds

'Eddy Rabbitt sang about loving a rainy night but in Costa Rica, hummingbirds love a rainy day. They sing the praises of rain loud and clear with their usual range of high-pitched chipping and sputtering complaints. Despite spending my fair share of soggy birding days in the tropics, I hadn’t realized just how much hummingbirds do love the rain until a recent experience at the Catarata del Toro , central Costa Rica.

Striated Heron-rufous morph

10,000 Birds

'The variation in colour of Striated Herons can be quite remarkable and around Broome they are generally very pale along the coast despite some very dark rocky outcrops. I have observed some extremely pale birds recently here in Broome and it reminded me of the incredibly dark Striated Heron that I found in Palmerston in the Northern Territory a few weeks ago.

Gray-necked Wood-Rails are Awesome (and Kind of Obnoxious)

10,000 Birds

'On our first morning at Finca Luna Nueva Lodge, Mike and I were making our way to the tower in the pre-dawn light to see what we could find from the level of the canopy. En route, we walked past the open-air restaurant where guests at Luna Nueva take their meals. And were we ever surprised to see a Gray-necked Wood-Rail , the first I had ever seen, cross our path and enter the restaurant!

Birds On The Brink

10,000 Birds

'There’s been some interesting bird research lately, having to do with the origin of birds ( new analysis of new and old fossils ) and the overarching taxonomy ( using DNA analysis ) but I’ve not had a chance to absorb this weighty new knowledge so I’ll probably write about it next month. Meantime, I wanted to point you to some current conversations about climate change and birds.

No Cute Title, Just an Owl Swimming

10,000 Birds

'I have backlogs of bird news to wade through for you, but couldn’t help singling out this spectacular story. There’s nothing earth-shatteringly newsy here, just a rarely seen behavior that was caught on camera. But honestly, it’s probably one of the coolest bird videos of the year. Steve Spitzer, a photographer well-known in Chicago’s birding community for his light-filled and lively portraits of (usually) shorebirds near his home, was strolling his usual stomping grounds at Loyola Beach on the

First Noel

10,000 Birds

'An itinerant lifestyle, while wonderful in some regards, does not lend itself to forming certain connections. While I enjoy birding with others, I’ve never really been part of the warp and weft of a birding community. In particular, since I generally travel in late December, I had never participated in a Christmas Bird Count until Corey kindly invited me to take part this year.

Wildlife Appreciation Gifting

'Season’s Greetings! Here’s a present for you: a nice turkey vulture. Somebody found him by the side of the road. He’s not feeling well. Here ya go. Good luck! Are you refusing delivery? Hmm, better call a wildlife rehabilitator. They’ll take him. What would they like in return? Nothing. Well … ok. Money. It’s less than a week until Christmas.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of December 2014?

10,000 Birds

'During the holidays, one good tern deserves another. Now that the holidays are truly upon us, scheduling birding excursions can be tough. But, surprisingly, the Yule season is as rich in birds as it is in good cheer. Obviously, we enjoy Christmas Bird Counts galore, but Santa also comes calling with not one, not two, but Twelve Days of Christmas, many of which are attended by special birds in specific numbers.

The Warbler Guide App: A Review by an App-loving Birder

10,000 Birds

'In the beginning, birding apps were all about sound—bird songs, bird calls. And it was good and convenient, especially during spring migration. The text on birding apps was pretty much like reading a field guide. In many cases it duplicated a print field guide, which was fine, because a field guide on your phone was still a lot lighter and more convenient than a book in your pocket.
