Winter Pelagic Trip Out of Freeport, New York, 11 January 2015

10,000 Birds

'Pelagic trips are a gamble on the vastness of the ocean. They can be incredibly dull or amazingly exciting on smooth seas or big waves. They can bring awesome rarities or nothing much at all. Rarely, you run aground. The point is almost anything can happen when you are out in a boat on the water but it certainly won’t happen, at least not to you, if you aren’t on the boat.

Overcoming Pet Winter Woes

4 The Love Of Animals

'Like humans, pets can experience winder doldrums. Even those living in warmer weather regions are still affected by seasonal changes, which can be especially tough on dogs and cats–particularly those that are used to spending time outdoors. How to Tell a Lesser Black-backed Gull from a Greater Black-backed Gull

10,000 Birds

'When you ask someone who is into gulls for help identifying a specific bird the conversation can get horribly dull amazingly quickly. Molt, windows, remiges and other opaque terms will be bandied about until your head explodes. Fortunately, we here at 10,000 Birds have much easier ways to help you identify gulls. For example, some new birders have a difficult time telling Lesser Black-backed Gulls and Greater Black-backed Gulls apart.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of January 2015?

10,000 Birds

'Wow, those are a lot of Oriental Pratincoles ! How is your 2015 year list looking so far? If you’re around 300 species, you’ve been keeping pace nicely with Noah Stryker. Only halfway through the first month of the year, and he’s already left most of us in the dust! I don’t expect to gain any ground as far as birds are concerned this weekend, as this bitter cold compels me to stay indoors as much as possible.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of January 2015)

10,000 Birds

'The month of January has so much to offer, from tropical migrants in the equatorial zones to visitors from the poles in our more temperate climes. If you didn’t get to explore this weekend, start planning for the next. Between work and NFL playoffs, I didn’t get out much. Fortunately, I had multitudinous murders of American Crows to appreciate; Rochester is reputed to have more crows than people.

Ten High Mountain Specialties from Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

'Mountains are a boon for birding. Although marching up and down and up and down can be a literal pain, the feathered rewards come in the form of super cool local species that rarely or never make it down to lower elevations. At least that’s the case for Costa Rica. The montane forests of Costa Rica and western Panama are home to at least 50 species of birds that live nowhere else except for one or two that also occur in northwestern Colombia.

The Art of Bird Camp

10,000 Birds

'I have been working in the avian world for 25 years, but last summer I was out-birded by a 14-year-old girl. Actually, I was bested by an entire group of teenagers, all gathered – along with 36 adults – on Hog Island , Audubon’s famous camp off the coast of Maine. Each year Hog Island offers programs, taught by a stellar staff of naturalists and artists, to groups of all kinds (teenagers, adults, families).

Four Groups of Neotropical Birds that may Challenge your ID Skills

10,000 Birds

'No doubt that one of the fun parts of birding is being able to identify birds in the field. Getting to a point where one is comfortable identifying birds takes time and dedication. Some bird groups take more to learn than others. Challenging groups of birds are those with very similar species occurring in one locality. Others include species where males and females have breeding and non-breeding plumages and those species that take multiple plumage stages to reach the adult age.

What is a Blue Goose?

10,000 Birds

'The “ Blue Goose ” is the dark morph of the Snow Goos e ( Chen caerulescens ). Click on photos for full sized images. Color morphs are controlled by a single gene locus where the dark allele is incompletely dominant to the light. The distribution of color morphs is unequal in the Snow Goose population, with the maximum number of blue-morph geese occurring in mid-continent breeding and wintering areas 1.

Birding just before the rain comes

10,000 Birds

'We have just had a few rather wet days and it is just what the land needed. The ideal rain comes from a tropical low, that does not form into a cyclone and just brings much needed rain to the land and does not blow anything over and this is exactly what we have been receiving. The ephemeral lakes around Broome had been drying out fast and the birds were concentrating at these watering points while they patiently waited for the stormy weather to arrive.
