Expectations and Suggestions for Caribbean Lowland Birding in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

Costa Rica is situated right between two oceans. To the north of this mountainous isthmus, we have the Atlantic. In the other direction, the Pacific. The pair of seas are close enough for the occasional adventurous frigatebird to just soar way up and right over to the other salty basin. The proximity of both slopes also facilitates seeing a lot of different species in a short span because the montane barrier has resulted in differences in terms of species and habitats.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of October 2016)

10,000 Birds

At least one weekend a year, bats–particularly the vampiric kind–command more attention than birds, at least from most people. Nature lovers, on the other hand, find time for wildlife watching every weekend. Just be sure to choose a Halloween costume that doesn’t obscure your vision too much! I saw lots of different kinds of woodpeckers this weekend, but that big, honking Pileated always wins out over the others for Best Bird honors.

Camping in Alafia River State Park: The Only Way I’ll Bird Early

10,000 Birds

In terms of early morning birding, I’m the worst. I have the best of intentions: planning my trip, getting my gear ready, setting my alarm. But when the time comes, the snooze button is ever ready and I immediately fall back asleep. As a result, I more often bird in the afternoon or evening, despite the fact that there are fewer birds I can actually see.

Do you consider yourself a wildlife conservationist? Do you contribute to wildlife conservation organizations? Maybe a worldwide organization like the Wildlife Conservation Network , BirdLife International or the Peregrine Fund ? Or maybe something closer to home like the American Bird Conservancy or a wildlife rescue organization like the Marine Mammal Center or International Bird Rescue.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of November 2016?

10,000 Birds

Here in the United States, we’ve emerged unscathed (well, most of us anyway) from one season of horror , only to find ourselves facing even greater terror, a portentous sense of dread that smothers even the faintest joy or optimism. Enjoy this last weekend before Election Day 2016… who knows where any of us will be birding next weekend! I’m enjoying a blissfully beautiful autumn here in the Finger Lakes region, though our dazzling foliage serves a backdrop to mainly resident bi

Animals of Kruger National Park: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

I’ll never forget my introduction to the mammals of Kruger National Park, South Africa. We –participants of the ABA South Africa Safari—were on a small plane when one Lori Conrad looked out the window and screamed, “There are elephants down there!” and everyone ran to Lori’s side of the plane. It’s a wonder we didn’t go into a tailspin from the sudden weight re-distribution.

Northern Australia birding

10,000 Birds

Last month we went camping and birding north of Broome and headed into the Northern Territory in search of some bird species that we had not seen yet this year. It is a great time of year for camping and birding and we had not been beyond Timber Creek in the Northern Territory since 2014. Some of the bird species we had observed already this year and they were on the 2016 year list , but we had not been able to photograph several of them at such close quarters.
