Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of April 2016)

10,000 Birds

After some weekends, we reflect on better views of birds we see all the time. Other times, however, find us smiling after seeing birds we haven’t seen in months. Are you smiling today? I didn’t wander far from home this weekend, but luckily a ton of new birds came to me. My favorites were the White-throated Sparrows who typically visit my feeders this time of year.

Flock Bronzewings

10,000 Birds

Flock Bronzewings Phaps histronica are an interesting bird that can show up in pairs or even large flocks on the odd occasion around Broome. It has been a few years since we have seen a large flock and in fact the last time we saw one close up it was a lone bird among the Plumed Whistling Ducks at the Derby Poo Ponds ! Other recent observations have been distant and until last Tuesday we had not had a good look at a pair of Flock Bronzewings for quite some time.

Biting the bullet or jumping the shark? A potential Baikal Wagtail in Germany

10,000 Birds

I recently saw and photographed what appears to be a Baikal Wagtail ( Motacilla alba-or-not baicalensis ) in Germany. If I am correct, this would apparently constitute a first record for the Western Palearctic. So it may turn out to be a bit of a big deal. Or a bit of a PR disaster for my birding skillz if I am not correct. So I guess some background wouldn’t hurt.
