In a country where guns are tightly controlled and even carrying a kitchen knife can result in a prison sentence, animal rights experts and politicians say street thugs have turned to dangerous-looking dogs to cow their victims. In 2009, London Deputy Mayor Kit Malthouse called for action on what he called "weapon dogs." From the AP.

Georgia Dog-Fighting Law Having an Impact
Before 2008, only one person had been incarcerated for dog fighting in Georgia. Considering the state had one of the weakest dog-fighting laws in the nation, that's no compliment. But since a new and tougher dog fighting law was passed in May 2008, multiple arrests have been made, with more on the horizon. This is a good thing.

Breed Specific Legislation
BSL (Breed-Specific Legislation) is the canine equivalent of racial profiling, banning certain dog breeds that have been labeled “dangerous.” Focusing on the breeds, instead of putting the blame where it belongs — on the individual dogs and their irresponsible owners — is discrimination in no uncertain terms.

Portugal Deals with Same Issues Around Dogfighting
Essentially, it sounds like they are having the same issues as we have in the US regarding dog fights and dog attacks. There are dog fights and dog attacks in Portugal and, per the December 5 post , the government came up with some legislation without consulting any animal rights groups.

Ontario Animal Welfare Law Goes Into Effect
