Roger Cohen Realizes Dogs=Pigs, Sort Of
repeat: If you eat meat (I'd say: products that come from animals) , you cannot logically find it morally or ethically repugnant to eat a particular meat (i.e., product that comes from an animal ). It's great that someone realizes that there is no real difference between dogs and cows. Are they any more or less sentient?

A Self-Interested Reason to Not Eat Meat
last year—28 million pounds—went to pigs, chickens, and cows, which in turn creates a perfect breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant super germs. In 2008, the FDA issued its second limit on the use of cephalosporins in cows, pigs, and chickens, citing the importance of cephalosporin drugs for treating disease in humans.

From Today's New York Times
In fact, a whole lot of semi-vegans can do much more for animals than the tiny number of people who are willing to give up all animal products and scrupulously read labels. Cows, domestic sheep, chickens and many others would not survive if they were not raised for human consumption, protected from malnutrition, disease and predators.

The One Animal Product You Should Feed Your Children
Benjamin Spock no longer recommends feeding animal products to children after two years of age. In recent years, the prevalence of disease-causing bacteria in meat, poultry, and eggs has risen sharply, which is why health authorities insist that these products be carefully handled and thoroughly cooked, if they are used at all. 32) Dr.

J. Baird Callicott on Domesticity
But this is not true of cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens. Callicott thinks so-called animal liberationists such as Peter Singer (author of Animal Liberation [1975]) want to release cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens into the wild. But this distinction lies at the very center of the land ethic. Domestic animals are creations of man.

Forget About Equal, How About Alive

Philip E. Devine on Vegetarianism
Such a vegetarian will, however, object to the drinking of milk, since the production of milk requires a painful separation between cow and calf. To that extent, he will be not only a vegetarian, but also a vegan, one who abstains not only from meat but also from animal products. Or he could object to the killing itself.

Miller’s assertion that rBGH-injected cows can help reduce milk prices. Anticorporate activists have campaigned against this and other ag biotech products for years in denial of the demonstrated environmental, economic and health benefits. In cows, the hormones have been shown to increase lameness, udder infections and bone cancer.

Reasons Consistently Applied
There are environmental reasons to go vegetarian: The production of animal-derived foods is implicated in every major environmental problem. This FAO report goes on to note that livestock production is a major contributor to "land degradation, climate change and air pollution, water shortage and water pollution and loss of biodiversity."

From the Mailbag
Yet, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently allowed companies to slap a "naturally raised" label on meat and meat products that come from animals whose upbringing was far from natural. We're currently at 9,556 signatures—96% of the way there! Cramped crates aren't natural living conditions for calves and sows. Meredith
