Some are saying that President Obama broke his promise to get a rescue dog. Others are accusing him of getting a dog from a breeder. He came from a breeder and did not have a successful first placement, but his is nowhere near the tough stories we hear about in shelters. (It But he wasn't really adopted from a breeder either.

Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? Would it matter?" This is why I didn't campaign for a greyhound--it raises their profile.

But I didn't campaign for a presidential greyhound for exactly the same reason Obama's decision was disappointing: it glorifies pure breed dogs. I wasn't an Obama supporter (or a McCain supporter) but I did appreciate a lot of what he appeared to believe in and wish for this country.
