The albatross photos are from pelagic trips out of Half Moon Bay by Alvaro’s Adventures and the Northern Fulmar photo was an unusual event—the beaching of a a blue whale carcass—that brought hundreds right up to the shore (video here ), also near Half Moon Bay.

We were initially wondering what the noises were and it turned out there were humpback whales slapping their fins and tail on the horizon and due to the distance it was taking a second or two for the sound to travel to us all on the beach at high tide! There’s always something interesting happening at the beach!

Japan's new center left Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama continues to support Japan's whaling operations. Japan's new government urged Australia on Tuesday to help prevent violent attacks by activists on Japanese whalers as it stood by the country's traditional support for whaling, an official said.

The Federal Immigration Department has cracked down on Sea Shepherd's Paul Watson, demanding to know the anti-whaling group leader's police and court records as it reviews his visa. Earlier this year they seized records and videos from the Steve Irwin, and are now holding up Paul Watson's visa requests.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin closed in on one of the vessels of the Japanese whaling fleet at 0730 Hours GMT (1930 Hours Sydney Time) on December 26th off the coast of the Australian Antarctic Territory north of the Mawson Peninsula. I guess I haven't been paying attention, as I didn't know this was going on again.
