Tests Involving the Burial of LIVE PIGS Are Halted
An experiment in which anesthetized pigs were buried alive in snow to learn how humans live or die in avalanches was halted today in Austria after animal-rights groups denounced the research as cruel and useless. The two-week experiment involving 29 pigs began Tuesday in the Western Austrian Alps. From USA Today.

Pigs Used in Explosives Tests in Britain
I wish we could stop killing animals for reasons related to killing humans. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has defended its use of more than 100 pigs in explosive tests in Wiltshire. Some 119 pigs were used in the research at the Government's military research laboratory Porton Down, near Salisbury, between 2006 and 2009.

Wisconsin-Madison Cleared by USDA
The University of Wisconsin-Madison was cleared of animal welfare violations in a report released yesterday. In one case, a pen housing a large pig was constructed with slats that regularly caused the pig to fall when its feet fell through. Tags: animal research animal laboratories wisconsin

University of Washington Allows Primate to Starve to Death
Department of Agriculture (USDA) report on the UW National Primate Research Center in September. The primate, a 3-and-a-half-year-old pig-tailed macaque, “had been found dead due to malnutrition resulting in a loss of 25 percent of its body weight,” the report said. An undercover PETA investigator shot hours of footage of alleged mistreatment of animals. vice president for research. It's a remarkably banal list of ordinary events in an animal-care facility." Failed to ensure that experiments minimized discomfort, distress and pain to the animals. Certainly a case to follow.

A Trip to an Animal Lab
In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. but did experiment on mice and guinea pigs. Interesting that many of the grants this place gets specifically say they can't experiment on any domesticated animals (cats and dogs I guess.). Well, kind of. It was a rather grim place.

Appeal Denied for Six Activists Convicted Under AEPA
Six members of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty were convicted at a 2006 trial in New Jersey of conspiracy to violate the 1992 Animal Enterprise Protection Act. The law, since revised, aimed to protect animal research laboratories from illegal, sometimes violent protests. It was a 2-1 decision by the US Court of Appeals.

ALF Spray Paints Bomb Threat in the Netherlands
ALF activists spray painted a bomb threat at Wageningen University in the Netherlands because they do animal research. For more than a year this university has been warned about their meaningless experiments on various animals and especially pigs (obesity research). Never heard of that approach.
