Vile Practices at Tulare County, CA Animal Shelter
Arrested in June 2007, Michael J. Cookson were accused of participating in an “off the books” arrangement wherein Harmon and Cookson carried out unauthorized mass euthanasias at the Tulare County, California shelter – reportedly using nonstandard and painful methods – by falsifying records to cover their actions. Barbaro's killing is a case of euthanasia. The word "euthanasia" means good, gentle, or easy ( eu ) death ( thanos ). The paradigm case of euthanasia is where a sentient being is terminally ill, will die soon anyway, and is in great pain. Euthanasia is often called mercy killing, for obvious reasons: Its motive is mercy.

To the Editor: The euthanasia of more than 1,000 dogs and cats at the main animal shelter in Las Vegas is surely a major tragedy in the sheltering field (news article , Feb. 20, 200716), and the rapid spread of diseases at a facility packed with 1,800 animals required swift action to prevent even more suffering and loss of life.
